Experts Weigh In: Will Robinson's Scandal Impact Trump's 2024 Bid?

 September 28, 2024

North Carolina's gubernatorial race has been rocked by a scandal involving Republican candidate Mark Robinson, raising questions about potential ripple effects on Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, political experts are divided on whether the controversy surrounding Robinson will harm Trump's chances in the crucial swing state.

The scandal erupted after CNN reported that Robinson had allegedly made inappropriate comments on a pornographic forum. Robinson, currently serving as North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor, has denied the accusations and vowed to take legal action against CNN. Despite calls for him to end his campaign due to election deadlines, Robinson's name will still appear on the November ballot.

Trump's North Carolina Prospects Under Scrutiny

Political analysts are closely examining the potential impact of Robinson's scandal on Trump's campaign in North Carolina. The state, which carries 16 Electoral College votes, has been a Republican stronghold in recent presidential elections.

Jason Husser, a Political Science Professor at Elon University, believes that while the scandal may not directly change voters' minds about Trump, it could affect turnout. Husser explained that gubernatorial campaigns can play a significant role in driving voter participation, especially in a closely divided state like North Carolina.

The professor noted that Robinson's campaign has "stalled out" those hopes for Trump, potentially impacting the Republican turnout efforts in the state.

Republican Party Faces Challenging Situation

The controversy has led to a notable shift in support for Robinson within the Republican Party. At least ten Republican individuals and groups have canceled events with the candidate, and some local politicians have removed images featuring Robinson from their social media accounts.

Despite the growing distance between Robinson and party members, the Republican Party of North Carolina finds itself in a difficult position. At this stage in the election process, Robinson would need to withdraw from the race voluntarily so that the party could have any chance of fielding a replacement candidate.

Husser outlined the complicated process that would ensue if Robinson were to drop out, involving significant party resources to inform voters about the change and redirect votes to a new candidate.

Potential Implications For the Presidential Race

Elon University's recent poll, conducted before the scandal broke, showed Vice President Kamala Harris leading Trump by a single percentage point in North Carolina – 46% to 45%. This narrow margin underscores the state's importance as a battleground in the upcoming election.

North Carolina has voted Republican in the last two presidential elections, with Trump securing victories in both 2016 and 2020. However, the margin of victory narrowed significantly from 3.6% in 2016 to 1.3% in 2020. Husser stated:

When you have an electorate that is split so down the middle like North Carolina, if you get an extra 1 percentage points because your governor's running next to you has a really good ground game of getting to vote out and motivating people and pulling in all the supporters for local candidates to also align with the governor and align with the presidential candidate, that can make a difference.

Voter Sentiment Shifts Visible On The Ground

Some tangible signs of changing voter sentiment are already visible in North Carolina. Husser observed that in his right-leaning community, approximately half of the Robinson campaign signs have been removed from yards, indicating a level of disillusionment among supporters. This shift in visible support could be an early indicator of potential challenges for both Robinson's gubernatorial bid and, by extension, Republican turnout efforts in the state.

The scandal surrounding Mark Robinson has introduced a new variable into North Carolina's political landscape. While experts are divided on the controversy's direct impact on Trump's campaign, it has the potential to affect Republican voter turnout in a critical swing state. As the election approaches, both parties will be closely monitoring how this situation unfolds and its potential implications for the presidential race in North Carolina.
