Tim Walz’s Motorcade Involved in Multi-Vehicle Incident, Staffer Hurt

 September 2, 2024

An accident involving the motorcade of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz resulted in the brief hospitalization of a staffer.

While traveling to a campaign event, a collision occurred, affecting several vehicles in the convoy carrying Minnesota's governor, New York Post reported.

The incident unfolded at approximately 1:57 p.m. ET as the motorcade headed towards Milwaukee for an event endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. Several press vans and other vehicles in the lineup were involved in the crash, significantly delaying their arrival.

A Critical Incident Delays Walz's Schedule

Fortunately, Governor Walz was not directly impacted by the crash, as he was in a vehicle near the front of the motorcade. Nevertheless, the implications of the incident were significant for the staffers and the press involved.

A staffer who was among those in the press vans suffered a broken arm. Jazmine Ulloa, a reporter from the New York Times, shared her experiences from the scene:

Jazmine Ulloa said, "A staff member in our press van appears to have a broken arm and is being treated by medics. Everyone else is shaken but appears to be in okay condition. We were violently thrown forward, as our van slammed into the one in front of us and was hit from behind. We are still unclear on what caused the crash. A woman in a BMW appears to have been stopped on a road that should have been cleared for the motorcade."

The collision caused an hour-long delay as emergency responders arrived on the site to manage the situation. This involved assessing injuries and coordinating the clearing and restructuring of the motorcade so that the journey could continue.

Communication and Concerns from the White House

Both Vice President Harris and President Joe Biden were immediately informed about the accident. They reached out to ensure that Governor Walz and everyone involved were safe.

According to a statement by a White House official, Vice President Harris got a briefing on the collision before she departed from Detroit and communicated directly with Governor Walz to express her concern and gather updates about the incident.

By the time Governor Walz arrived at the event in Milwaukee, the situation had been stabilized. In his remarks, he acknowledged the accident and provided reassurance about the conditions of those affected.

Governor Walz Addresses The Incident Upon Arrival

"Some of you might have heard that some of my staff and members of the press traveling with us were involved in a traffic accident on the way here today," Walz said. "We've spoken with the staff, and I'm relieved to say that with a few minor injuries, everyone is going to be OK."

The press was reloaded into new vans, and the motorcade resumed its journey around 2:50 p.m. ET. Despite the delay, Governor Walz reached Milwaukee and participated in the planned campaign event.

In conclusion, a multi-vehicle crash involving Governor Tim Walz's motorcade caused minor injuries and a significant delay. However, prompt medical response and coordination among officials, including Vice President Harris and President Biden, allowed for a quick resolution. Governor Walz addressed the incident upon arrival, assuring the public of the safety and recovery of all involved.
