Nine Harmony High School students were arrested on felony charges after cellphone video showed them beating a classmate who had stopped cafeteria bullying, with a sheriff’s captain calling the attackers cowards.

Osceola County deputies took nine students into custody after a cellphone video captured the group attack on a 17-year-old boy outside Harmony High School in Florida. The victim had earlier stepped in when other students threw carrots at a girl in the cafeteria.

That intervention sparked an argument. After the final bell, one of those involved jumped the teen as he walked toward his car. Eight others joined in. The victim’s girlfriend broke up the fight. His mother then took him to the hospital, where he received 11 stitches on his face.

New York Post reporting detailed how deputies identified all nine suspects from the chaotic cellphone footage that showed students raining blows while others screamed and egged them on.

Sheriff’s captain says nine-on-one attack left victim lucky

Captain Kimberly Montes of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office described the beating in blunt terms.

"This was a serious attack,"

Montes added:

"This was not one-on-one, two-on-one, this was nine students against one, and we’re just lucky he didn’t receive more serious injuries than what he got,"

Two of the accused are 18-year-olds, Quianelle Antonio Reyes-Cintron and Bryan Alexander Ramirez. Both were booked into the Osceola County Jail. The other seven, one 17-year-old, five 16-year-olds, and one 14-year-old, were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

All nine face charges of felony aggravated battery and felony inciting a riot. Montes called for them to be tried as adults and labeled their conduct clearly.

"We tell kids all the time, ‘Stand up for somebody else!’ It takes a lot of courage to do that. He did this and these nine students that beat him up are the ones that are cowards."

School district draws hard line on violence

Osceola County School District Superintendent Mark Shanoff condemned the attack. He said violence would not be tolerated on or off campus.

The sequence is straightforward. A student sees carrots thrown at a girl, tells the bullies to stop, argues with two of them, leaves the cafeteria with the girl, and later gets jumped by the group on the way to his car. Video captures the pile-on. Deputies make the arrests. The victim needs stitches. The accused face adult-level felony counts.

Pack violence against a kid who did exactly what adults tell students to do deserves no soft landing. Real consequences for the nine who jumped him send the only message that protects the next student willing to intervene.
