The basketball legend is set to return to the sport that made him famous, but this time from a different perspective.
According to Fox News, Michael Jordan will join NBC's NBA coverage as a "special contributor" when the network begins broadcasting games later this year.
The announcement came during NBC's Upfront presentation in New York, marking a significant return to basketball for Jordan, who has been largely absent from the sport since selling his ownership stake in the Charlotte Hornets in August 2023 for over $3 billion. The move represents a reunion between Jordan and NBC, where he enjoyed many memorable moments during his playing career.
NBC Sports president Rick Cordella expressed enthusiasm about bringing the basketball icon aboard. The network secured an 11-year media rights deal for NBA games last July, setting the stage for this high-profile partnership. Jordan's involvement adds significant star power to NBC's broadcasting team.
The six-time NBA champion shared his thoughts on the new venture. Here's what he had to say:
I am so excited to see the NBA back on NBC. The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I'm excited about being a special contributor to the project. I'm looking forward to seeing you all when the NBA on NBC launches this October.
This development comes as Jordan has been focusing his attention on his NASCAR team, 23XI Racing, where he serves as co-owner. His pursuit of a NASCAR championship has kept him engaged in professional sports, albeit in a different capacity.
The addition of Jordan to NBC's coverage team coincides with significant changes in NBA media rights. The network will share broadcasting duties with ESPN/ABC and Amazon, creating a diverse platform for NBA content delivery. Games will also be available for streaming on NBC's Peacock service.
Jordan's credentials as a basketball analyst are unmatched. His legacy includes five NBA MVP awards, 14 All-Star selections, and an unblemished record in NBA Finals appearances. His experience primarily with the Chicago Bulls, followed by a stint with the Washington Wizards, provides him with comprehensive knowledge of the game.
The move represents NBC's commitment to delivering premium basketball coverage. The network's strategy involves leveraging Jordan's expertise and universal appeal to enhance their broadcast quality and attract viewers.
This new role allows Jordan to maintain his connection to basketball while expanding his influence in sports media. His transition from player to owner to broadcaster showcases his versatility in different aspects of professional sports.
The timing of Jordan's return coincides with NBC's reentry into NBA broadcasting. The network's previous coverage of the league featured some of Jordan's most iconic moments as a player, making this partnership particularly meaningful.
The arrangement demonstrates Jordan's continued ability to impact the sport, even years after his playing career. His involvement promises to bring unique insights and perspectives to NBC's coverage.
Michael Jordan's appointment as NBC's special contributor marks a significant moment in basketball broadcasting. The basketball legend will bring his unparalleled experience and knowledge to NBC's NBA coverage when it launches in October 2025. The partnership between Jordan and NBC represents a strategic move that benefits both parties. While Jordan gains a platform to share his basketball expertise, NBC strengthens its broadcasting team with one of the sport's most recognizable figures. The collaboration is set to enhance NBA coverage and provide viewers with expert analysis from the greatest player of all time.
