Meghan Markle's acting return stalls after Gentlemen talks end and Netflix ally exits

Meghan Markle's push to restart her acting career has hit a wall after talks for Netflix's The Gentlemen collapsed, and experts say her streamer safety net is gone.

Friends close to the Duchess of Sussex now claim she was used to hype the Guy Ritchie series, while royal commentators tell Fox News Digital that the exit of her strongest champion inside Netflix leaves her acting comeback in doubt before it starts.

Deadline had described the casting talks as still in the very early stages. The Hollywood Reporter noted the part was being written and that it remained unclear how many episodes she might appear in. Those talks are over.

Sources close to Meghan told The Telegraph she believes Netflix leaked her potential involvement to promote Season 2 because it "wasn't as good as the first season." A source close to Netflix pushed back hard through The Times.

"This is not a show in need of stunt casting."

Fox News Digital reached out to both Archewell and Netflix for comment and received no on-the-record replies quoted in the report.

Bela Bajaria's exit removes Meghan's key defender

British broadcaster Helena Chard pointed straight at the personnel change that matters most. Bela Bajaria, Netflix's then-chief content officer and the executive long described as Harry and Meghan's internal champion, recently left the company after nearly a decade. The departure came amid layoffs of around 1,000 employees, Variety reported.

"The previous safety net is gone. Unfortunately for Meghan, she may want to jump straight into a top acting role, but there is far more stacked against it happening."

Chard made that assessment directly to Fox News Digital. A Netflix consultant who worked closely with Bajaria told The Times the couple lost their fiercest advocate.

"Effectively, their biggest champion has gone, and they are uncertain about who will be shouting for their cause in the future."

The same consultant said teams inside Netflix knew Bajaria stayed fiercely loyal to the couple and determined to prove they were a successful signing even when viewer response differed.

Public criticism of Netflix signals the partnership is fraying

Kinsey Schofield, host of Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered, told Fox News Digital the tone from Meghan's side is the clearest tell yet.

"What I find most revealing is that Meghan's camp now appears comfortable publicly criticizing Netflix. This was one of their most important commercial partners. You don't typically throw a company under the bus when you're counting on them to finance your next big project."

Schofield added that Netflix has already withdrawn from its investment in As Ever, Meghan's lifestyle brand. The partnership involving As Ever ended in March 2026, with the duchess moving forward independently. "With Love, Meghan" ran two seasons and a holiday special in 2025; reports in January 2026 indicated it would not return for a third season.

Harry and Meghan first partnered with Netflix in 2020 on a deal reportedly worth $100 million. Projects included the 2022 series "Harry & Meghan," "Heart of Invictus" in 2023, and "Polo" in 2024. In July 2025, reports suggested the original agreement would not be renewed. In August 2025, Netflix announced a new multiyear first-look deal with Archewell Productions. The Gentlemen itself was renewed for a third season that same month.

Schofield noted Meghan had publicly credited Bajaria at the TIME100 Summit in New York on April 23, 2025, for recognizing the television potential in her homemade gifts and for the idea behind "With Love, Meghan." After Bajaria left, the publicity-exploitation accusations followed. Schofield asked whether that sequence sounds like a relationship with a promising future.

Comeback talk collides with earlier claims she was finished

People magazine reported that Meghan and Harry had discussed her return to acting "for some time" and that she was excited. She has already filmed a cameo in the upcoming film "Close Personal Friends" alongside Lily Collins and Jack Quaid. Ian Pelham Turner, a royal broadcaster, told Fox News Digital he believes the desire is genuine and pointed to her seven seasons as Rachel Zane on "Suits" as proof she can deliver.

"The role which brought her to fame in ‘Suits’ proves she is an actress of quality. If she wanted to return to acting, which I believe is still a passion, then she could bring great credit to any production."

Yet Schofield underscored the contradiction in the public record. Meghan told Variety in 2022 she was "done" with acting. During the 2017 engagement interview she said she had "ticked this box." Now, after the California years and multiple reinvention efforts, the acting talk has returned just as she and Harry moved back toward Britain.

Schofield argued a role in an established Guy Ritchie production could have changed the conversation about her professional record. She also called the timing revealing: the couple had just returned to Britain, a move easily read as recognition that the Hollywood experiment had not delivered the expected success, and suddenly casting rumors appeared. Royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital that Meghan "did nothing to thwart all the speculation" sooner and that Netflix issued no statement to kill the rumors. Both sides, Fordwich said, "benefited from the additional coverage even if, as they claim, it wasn't needed."

Schofield's sharper point landed on the gap between publicity and results: Meghan's royal connections might get her into the room, but they do not guarantee a successful acting career. At some point the work has to speak for itself. She added that the suggestion Netflix needed Meghan to rescue viewing figures was quite a claim from someone whose own lifestyle series struggled to become a mainstream hit, and that the Sussexes' PR ambitions continue to outpace their professional accomplishments.

PR ambitions and royal proximity still open doors in Hollywood and London. They do not automatically deliver the performance or the audience that lasting careers require.
