Kai Trump, President Trump’s 19-year-old granddaughter, shared a hospital-bed photo after successful wrist surgery for a college golf injury, putting long-term health ahead of her freshman season.
The University of Miami women’s golfer announced the outcome in an Instagram update and posted a selfie from her bed with her left arm in a cast and sling. Fox News Digital reported she was treated at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
She said the injury came during her first tournament of the season and that the procedure was meant to repair the wrist damage. The New York Post reported the injury struck in September and derailed the start of her freshman campaign.
At 19, Kai is the president’s eldest grandchild, a competitive golfer, and a Miami commit now playing Division I golf. Family milestones have stayed in public view before, including when Kai Trump documented her move to Miami and early campus health hurdles.
Kai said she had hoped to skip the operating room. After speaking with family, coaches, and athletic training staff, she went forward anyway.
She wrote:
"While I had hoped to avoid surgery, after talks with my family, coaches and athletic training staff, I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love,"
That framing matters. This was a planned repair for durability in golf, not a sudden crisis spun for headlines. She thanked Dr. Carlson and the HSS team, plus teammates, coaches, and relatives who backed the call.
Trump family coverage often mixes sports, school, and public life, from campus moves to lighter personal notes such as when Trump joked about Don Jr.’s marriage changing his son’s habits.
Kai was clear that healing “will take time.” She said she feels fortunate to have people around her who keep her focused on growth through the setback.
She added:
"It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination."
This was not her first wrist operation. In a July appearance on “Fox & Friends,” she said she had already undergone wrist surgery six months earlier, while talking through nerves about freshman year and Division I golf at Miami.
She also pointed to the competitive streak at home, saying her mom competes too, “but definitely Grandpa’s very competitive.” White House years compress family bandwidth, a theme that has surfaced when Melania Trump spoke about fading family time as Barron grows more independent.
Photo captions in the coverage also showed Kai playing tee shots at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla., during The Annika on Nov. 13 and 14, 2025, a reminder of how quickly a young athlete’s calendar can flip from tournament golf to rehab.
Her closing note left little doubt about the goal. Heal first. Trust the process. Get back with the Hurricanes.
She wrote:
"For now, it’s all about healing, and trusting the process. I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love. I’ll be back before you know it, stronger and more grateful than ever! Go Canes!"
Political noise around the Trump family never fully quiets, including cycles in which Democrats have threatened family-focused investigations after elections. A 19-year-old’s wrist surgery is still a sports-medicine story first.
She made the hard call for long-term health, said so plainly, and put the focus back on work, recovery, and the team. That is accountability without the spin.
