Julie Andrews spotted in the Hamptons at 91 after months away from cameras

Oscar winner Julie Andrews was photographed at 91 during a rare Hamptons outing, her first public appearance in months as she steps further from the camera.

Page Six obtained photos of the “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music” star being helped out of a vehicle last Friday in the Hamptons. She wore a lilac jacket, a white baseball cap, and pink-shaded sunglasses. The appearance came after months without a public sighting, and just after she turned 91 earlier this month.

Andrews has spent nearly eight decades in the business. She won an Oscar for “Mary Poppins,” became a household name in “The Sound of Music,” and later played Queen Clarisse Renaldi in 2001’s “The Princess Diaries.” She is not chasing the next on-screen moment. She has already said so.

Andrews says the on-camera chapter is largely closed

In an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Andrews said she is doing fewer camera jobs and has shifted her work.

She told the outlet:

"I’m not completely retired, but it’s a different kind of work that I do these days, [writing] books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers,"

That is a plain account of a long career entering a quieter phase. Books, podcasts, and voiceovers keep her working without the grind of film sets. She did not dress it up as a comeback tour.

Hollywood still wants another “Princess Diaries” chapter. Andrews has closed that door for herself.

She passed on a third “Princess Diaries” film

Andrews portrayed the queen of fictional Genovia opposite Anne Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 hit. A third film has been discussed for years. In the same August interview, Andrews made clear she would not return.

She said:

"I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now,"

And she added:

"It isn’t that I’m not enthusiastic for it. It’s just that I really don’t feel I should be part of it now,"

That is an adult decision. Studios love sequels. Audiences love familiar titles. Andrews chose not to force a role she no longer feels is hers. Respect for the original work includes knowing when to step aside.

Hathaway, 43, has kept the project alive on her end. In July, on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show, she said the script was still moving and had taken a new direction.

Hathaway said:

"The script that we were working on, we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one,"

Whether that film gets made is a studio problem. Andrews has already given her answer. She is not obliged to prop up every nostalgia play Hollywood lines up.

The Hamptons photos show a 91-year-old legend out in public, helped from a car, dressed simply, and living at her own pace. After nearly eighty years of work, that is earned. The industry can keep recycling titles. Andrews does not have to play along.

A culture that honors real achievement lets its greats set their own terms, and stops treating every classic as raw material for one more forced sequel.
