A respected NFL figure who made his mark both as a player and coach has passed away.
According to The Daily Caller, Dick Jauron, who served as head coach for both the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills, died Saturday at age 74 following a battle with cancer.
His daughter Kacy revealed through a Facebook post that what initially appeared to be memory issues turned out to be cancer that had spread to multiple organs, including his brain, lungs, liver, and bones.
She noted that the rapid progression of his condition meant he remained unaware of his diagnosis and experienced no pain.
Jauron's football journey began as a talented defensive back, getting drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1973. His playing career included five successful seasons with the Lions, during which he earned Pro Bowl honors in 1974. After his stint with the Lions, he also played for the Cincinnati Bengals.
The transition from player to coach proved natural for Jauron, who went on to build an impressive coaching resume.
His most notable achievement came in 2001 when he led the Chicago Bears to a remarkable 13-3 record, earning him the NFL Coach of the Year award. That season ended with a playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round.
Following his tenure with the Bears, Jauron took the helm of the Buffalo Bills from 2006 to 2009. He also served the Detroit Lions organization in multiple capacities, including as defensive coordinator and interim head coach in 2005.
Former Bills center Eric Wood, who was drafted by Jauron in the first round of the 2009 draft, shared his thoughts on his former coach's passing:

He set a great foundation for my career with his extensive knowledge of the NFL game and helped us develop as professionals both on and off the field. Coach Jauron was a sincere and thoughtful family man and a true gentleman. My heart goes out to his family during this difficult time.
The Detroit Lions organization acknowledged Jauron's contributions to their franchise through social media, highlighting his playing career achievements and coaching service.
His passing occurred just two days after the death of Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey at age 102, marking a somber period for the NFL community.
