A 65-year-old former chemistry teacher at an all-boys Catholic school in north London took the stand to deny seven counts of indecent assault against two teenage boys, allegations she called "total fabrication" rooted in "fantasy."

Sally-Anne Bowen faced cross-examination at Harrow Crown Court on Monday, where prosecutor Madeline Wolfe pressed her on claims that she sexually abused two pupils at Christ's College in Finchley roughly 40 years ago. Bowen was in her mid-20s at the time. The boys were 14 or 15.

The first accuser told jurors that he had sex with Bowen approximately 20 to 30 times over several months, including at her home and at the school. He said he considered her his girlfriend and believed he was in love with her. The second accuser alleged that Bowen kissed him in a cafe after other boys goaded him into it, and that he recalled touching her breasts. Bowen denied every allegation, the New York Post reported.

Bowen stepped out of the witness box to show jurors her skirt length

Wolfe suggested during cross-examination that Bowen had worn tight tops and mini skirts while teaching at the school. Bowen pushed back. She stood up from the witness box and demonstrated the length of her skirt for the jury, insisting her clothing was professional.

Bowen told the court:

"They were way shorter than I'm wearing now, they were not mini skirts."

She added that the school's dress code would not have allowed very short skirts, and that she simply refused to dress like a dowdy bureaucrat. Her phrasing was blunt:

"I wasn't going to dress like Margaret Thatcher."

Wolfe also pressed Bowen on whether she had crossed professional boundaries by treating male students more like friends than pupils. Bowen acknowledged that she wanted to be liked, and said she saw nothing wrong with that.

"I wanted to be liked and I make no apology for that. I was young, it was my first teaching job, of course I wanted to be liked."

She described herself as one of only a few young female teachers at the all-boys school. She said students sometimes made comments as she walked past, but she dismissed them as minor.

"It was not a huge problem, I would hear comments as I walked past and I ignored them, they didn't result in me being hassled or harassed."

Accusers described alleged classroom conduct involving a sex manual

A former pupil, whose relationship to the two named accusers is unclear from court proceedings, testified about an alleged incident in Bowen's classroom. He claimed a boy had been reading what may have been the Kama Sutra, and that Bowen flipped through it while discussing the merits of different sexual positions with students. Bowen flatly denied any such thing happened.

She told the court she had never once seen boys looking at pornographic material during her teaching career:

"I have never in my teaching career seen boys looking at a pornographic magazine, the only magazine that I ever confiscated was a football magazine."

One accuser compared Bowen's alleged behavior to pop star Sabrina Carpenter's controversial 2023 "Feather" music video, which was filmed in a New York church. The comparison appeared aimed at characterizing Bowen as provocative in a religious-school setting. Bowen rejected the analogy along with everything else.

Bowen says she has 'no idea' why the accusations surfaced decades later

Wolfe asked Bowen why the first accuser would come forward more than three decades after the alleged abuse. Bowen offered no explanation, only a denial.

"I don't know why he is making these allegations. I have no idea what is going on at this point."

She conceded one thing: the accuser may have had a schoolboy crush on her.

"I think he certainly had a crush on me at school."

But she drew a hard line between a teenage crush and any sexual contact, calling the allegations a "total fabrication" and "the workings of a fantasy." She described her relationship with students in simple terms:

"I was a nice person and students talked to me."

The trial at Harrow Crown Court continues. Bowen faces seven counts of indecent assault against the two boys. She denies all charges. No verdict has been reached.

Whatever happened in those classrooms 40 years ago, the justice system owes both the accused and the accusers what every case demands: a fair hearing, tested evidence, and a verdict built on facts, not on decades-old impressions or pop-culture comparisons.
