Body language expert flags deception cues as Ilhan Omar solicits cash after D.C. raid

A body language expert says Rep. Ilhan Omar flashed countless deception signals while soliciting donations after a federal raid on her D.C. home tied to a citizenship probe.

Florida-based body language expert Lillian Glass told The Post that the Minnesota Democrat showed clear cues of nervousness and deception in a video message filmed in the back of a car. The clip marked Omar’s first on-camera appeal to the public since Homeland Security Investigations agents raided her Washington home.

Omar used the late-Tuesday video to press supporters for $5, $10, and $20 donations. She framed the money as needed “to help fight back against the Trump administration” and insisted she would not be silenced.

Glass, who has served as an expert witness in federal and state courts and cites four decades of behavioral analysis, did not buy the confident posture. She pointed to a string of physical tells that undercut the message Omar tried to project.

Glass details raised shoulders, shaky head, and a nervous smile

Glass zeroed in on Omar’s facial expression and delivery. She described the smile as forced and the eye contact as mismatched to the words.

Attribution before the assessment came straight from Glass’s review of the footage.

"It’s a nervous smile, and her eyes are not smiling, so it’s not genuine."

Glass also flagged eyebrow and lip movement that, in her reading, signaled doubt rather than resolve.

"The lips curve downward; the raising [of her] eyebrows reflect that she is questioning her own words."

She tied the same raised brows to surprise at the federal pressure now surrounding Omar.

"Her raised eyebrows also mean surprise at what has happened to her, as she did not expect this."

The broader pattern, Glass said, went well beyond a single awkward moment. She listed raised shoulders, mistimed head shakes, and a rising inflection on a key personal pronoun as classic deception markers.

"There are also countless signals of deception, from her raised shoulders to her shaking her head not when she should be shaking it."

Omar’s line about the administration “trying to intimidate ‘me’” drew special notice. Glass said the upward pitch on “me” landed like a question, not a firm claim, and called that shift a significant deception signal. She also noted lip licking as a sign that Omar’s autonomic nervous system was kicking in under stress.

Raid and citizenship questions sit behind the fundraising pitch

Homeland Security Investigations agents executed the search at Omar’s D.C. home on Monday of last week after obtaining a warrant. The action followed the revelation of a federal probe into her citizenship status.

Investigators are examining whether Omar was listed as a minor on her father’s naturalization paperwork when she was actually 18 rather than 17. Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, became a U.S. citizen in 2000. Omar’s path to citizenship ran through that filing. He died in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The family arrived in the United States in the mid-1990s as refugees from Somalia. Omar has served in Congress since early 2019. Those basic biographical facts now sit inside a wider immigration-fraud inquiry that has already produced over a dozen grand jury subpoenas aimed at family members and other key figures.

Earlier reporting established that federal investigators planned to use DNA evidence in the fraud case against Omar, a thread covered in detail when prosecutors secured DNA material tied to long-running allegations.

Omar cast the entire effort as political lawfare. In the car video she claimed President Trump and his allies are “running scared” and declared “we’re not going to be intimidated.” She accused the administration of trying to scare and silence her while she solicited small-dollar gifts to keep fighting.

Subpoenas and the home search widen the paper trail

The volume of grand jury process already issued shows the probe is not limited to a single document. Relatives and associates have been pulled in through subpoenas that expand the same immigration-fraud file, consistent with prior accounts of how grand jury subpoenas reached Omar relatives.

The D.C. raid itself did not occur in a vacuum. Reporting on the investigative steps that opened the door has pointed to family communications that helped justify the warrant, including the family texts that preceded the HSI search.

Agents also seized Omar’s cellphone during that home operation, another concrete step in the same citizenship and fraud inquiry described when agents took the congresswoman’s phone.

No injuries, arrests, or formal charging documents appear in the available public account of the raid. What is public is the warrant-backed search, the citizenship-age question centered on the 2000 naturalization, the stack of subpoenas, and Omar’s rapid turn to a donation appeal filmed away from a formal setting.

Omar projects defiance while the record stays unfinished

Omar’s video tried to set a simple frame: federal investigators as the aggressors, small donors as the resistance, and her own resolve as unbroken. Glass’s reading of the same footage points the other way, surprise, stress responses, and delivery that undercuts the certainty in the script.

Related financial and fraud questions around Omar’s circle have continued to surface in other venues, including scrutiny that closed an Omar-linked winery amid widening claims. Those separate threads sit outside the body-language review but keep the accountability pressure on the same political network.

Absolute calendar dates for the raid and the video remain unstated beyond “Monday of last week” and “late Tuesday.” Case numbers, the full warrant text, and any final charging decisions are likewise not public in this account. What stands is the sequence: warrant, home search by HSI, citizenship-status probe focused on age at the father’s 2000 naturalization, a burst of grand jury subpoenas, and a car-shot fundraising pitch that a court-experienced behavioral analyst says is loaded with deception cues.

Voters and taxpayers get to watch both the pitch and the paper trail. When a member of Congress answers a federal search with a donation drive, the body language is only one more data point, the records and the subpoenas will decide the rest.
