GMA celebrity Ginger Zee involved in Delta flight's urgent JFK landing

 April 1, 2025

Good Morning America meteorologist Ginger Zee found herself in an unexpected situation during what should have been a routine flight to Dallas.

According to Daily Mail, Delta Flight 856 was forced to make an emergency landing at JFK International Airport due to hydraulic system failure shortly after departing from LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday.

The flight carrying 102 passengers and five crew members departed LaGuardia at 10:26 am bound for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Emergency protocols were initiated when the Airbus A220 experienced mechanical issues related to its hydraulic pressure, prompting the flight crew to divert the aircraft.

Quick thinking leads to successful emergency protocol

Delta's flight crew made the strategic decision to land at JFK rather than return to LaGuardia. The choice was influenced by JFK's longer runway capacity, which provided better landing conditions for the affected aircraft.

The emergency landing was executed successfully around noon, with fire trucks positioned around the aircraft as a precautionary measure. All passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the plane.

A Delta spokesperson emphasized that safety remained the top priority throughout the incident. The airline has arranged alternative flights to Dallas for all affected passengers.

GMA star shares real-time updates from emergency situation

Zee took to social media platform X to inform her followers about the situation. She maintained a calm demeanor while providing updates about the emergency landing.

The meteorologist posted:

Not an April fool's joke. Our plane took off from LGA but just turned around and had an emergency landing at JFK because of a hydraulics system failure. Fire trucks all around, thankfully just precaution. Many thanks to these heroes who are always ready. Grateful to be safe.

The incident occurred amid ongoing investigations into another Delta aircraft incident from February 17, when a plane flipped over on a Toronto runway.

Delta faces scrutiny over recent aircraft incidents

The Toronto incident resulted in 21 hospitalizations, though all patients were subsequently released. Nine Canadian passengers, including a minor, have filed lawsuits in Minnesota against the airline.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is currently investigating various aspects of the Toronto incident. Their examination includes landing techniques, pilot training, flight attendant procedures, and organizational management factors. Delta maintains its commitment to passenger safety while addressing these incidents. The airline continues to cooperate with investigating authorities regarding both situations.

Emergency response highlights aviation safety measures

The quick response to Flight 856's hydraulic issues demonstrates the effectiveness of emergency protocols in commercial aviation. The incident began at LaGuardia Airport in Queens when the Dallas-bound Delta flight experienced mechanical problems shortly after takeoff. Fire crews and emergency response teams were immediately deployed to JFK International Airport, where the aircraft successfully landed. The coordinated effort between air traffic control, emergency responders, and the flight crew ensured all 107 people aboard the aircraft remained safe throughout the ordeal.
