The Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo was the scene of a devastating accident early on Tuesday.
According to Fox News, A roof collapse at the venue during a concert led to over 100 fatalities, including two former Major League Baseball players.
The incident took place in the capital's popular Jet Set nightclub. World Series champion pitcher Octavio Dotel and former Washington National Tony Blanco tragically died when the structure gave way.
Octavio Dotel, a celebrated pitcher from Santo Domingo, was attending the event. Despite efforts to save him, rescuers were unable to prevent Octavio from succumbing to his injuries shortly after they pulled him from the debris.
Tony Blanco, known for a brief MLB stint and a longer career overseas, also lost his life in the collapse. Another notable victim was Nelsy Cruz, a local government leader and sister to MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.
The collapse occurred while singer Rubby Pérez was performing. The disaster injured over 255 attendees, a testament to its severity and suddenness.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed his sorrow over the deaths. "Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passing of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz, and all the victims of last night's tragedy in Santo Domingo. We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected and to our colleague Nelson and his entire family," he said.
First Lady of the Dominican Republic, Raquel Abraje, relayed a distress call from Nelsy Cruz on the night of the accident. At 12:49 a.m., Nelsy informed President Luis Abinader that she lay trapped under the debris.
According to a police spokesperson, Diego Pesqueira, Octavio Dotel's condition deteriorated during transport to the designated hospital, where he ultimately passed away.

The Houston Astros, one of Dotel's thirteen MLB teams, paid tribute to their former player, acknowledging his significant contributions on and off the field.
