Republican Senator Ron Johnson launches investigation into whether senior officials concealed information about former President Biden's cognitive decline during his administration.

According to The Hill, Sen. Ron Johnson, chair of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, is writing letters to more than two dozen former senior Biden administration officials requesting testimony about their knowledge of the former president's health problems.

Johnson's investigation follows allegations that White House officials deliberately concealed Biden's cognitive and physical decline from the public.

Committee Issues Formal Invitations

Johnson's staff is sending letters requesting interviews to high-profile former officials including Vice President Kamala Harris, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Biden's former chief of staff Jeff Zients. The Wisconsin senator emphasized that his investigation targets anyone who should have had frequent contact with the former president during his administration.

Johnson indicated he would begin with polite invitations before considering more aggressive measures. He told reporters that the committee would first invite officials to participate voluntarily in what he described as relatively brief interviews.

Johnson outlined his expectations for the testimony sessions. He stated that the interviews wouldn't need to be daylong affairs or even half-day commitments, requesting just one hour of each official's time to answer basic questions about their observations and interactions with the former president.

Subpoena Threats Loom Large

The senator made clear that subpoenas remain an option if former officials refuse to cooperate with his investigation. Johnson noted he doesn't need support from the subcommittee's top-ranking Democrat, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, to issue subpoenas unilaterally.

Johnson emphasized the public's right to know about potential health cover-ups. He argued that former administration officials owe transparency to the American people regarding their knowledge of Biden's condition during his presidency.

Biden Family Pushes Back

Former President Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden have strongly disputed reports suggesting a deliberate cover-up of serious health problems during the second half of his term. Biden recently told "The View" that he could have defeated Trump in November 2024 if he had remained in the race.

Biden stepped aside from the 2024 presidential race after facing enormous pressure from Democratic lawmakers and donors following his poor debate performance against Trump in June. He characterized his debate showing as simply having "a bad, bad night" that didn't reflect any serious cognitive or health issues.

Jill Biden defended her husband's work ethic and mental acuity during their White House years. She criticized authors of books alleging mental lapses, stating they "weren't in the White House with us" and didn't witness how hard Biden worked daily, often continuing to read briefings and work with staff late into the evening.

Investigation Gains Fresh Momentum

Recent reporting has intensified questions about potential health cover-ups within the Biden administration. A new book by CNN's Jake Tapper and Axios's Alex Thompson titled "Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-up, and his Disastrous Choice to Run Again" contains explosive allegations about the former president's condition.

The book reports that senior White House aides discussed the possibility that Biden would need a wheelchair if elected to a second term. Additionally, the authors documented an incident where Biden allegedly failed to recognize Hollywood star and major Democratic donor George Clooney at a June 2024 fundraiser.

Tapper and Thompson described Biden as appearing "severely diminished, as if he'd aged a decade since Clooney last saw him in December 2022." These revelations have provided fresh ammunition for Republican critics who argue that the administration deliberately misled the public about Biden's fitness for office.

Johnson Pursues Administration Accountability

Senator Johnson's investigation represents the latest Republican effort to examine the Biden administration's handling of the former president's health concerns. The Wisconsin senator chairs a powerful subcommittee with broad investigative authority, positioning him to compel testimony from reluctant witnesses. Johnson's probe will focus on determining what senior administration officials knew about Biden's cognitive and physical condition and when they knew it. The investigation aims to uncover whether there was a coordinated effort to conceal the former president's health struggles from Congress and the American public during his time in office.
