Washington Post Tags Editor's Note on Opinion Articles by Accused Foreign Agent

 July 19, 2024

Sue Mi Terry, a widely recognized former CIA analyst, has been charged with serious allegations concerning her undisclosed ties to South Korean intelligence services.

The Washington Post added Editor's Notes to opinion pieces to clarify that they were written by a columnist accused of being a foreign agent for South Korea.

According to Fox News, Terry has been indicted for allegedly operating as an unregistered foreign agent on behalf of South Korea, bringing to light the problematic intertwining of her journalistic contributions with secretive international relations.

The charges, unveiled by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, accuse Terry of breaching the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Williams highlighted that Terry purportedly gave South Korean operatives clandestine access and facilitated them with informational and advocacy support within the U.S.

Accusations Mar Journalist's Career

Terry stepped down from her position at the CIA in 2008 amidst rising suspicions over her engagements with South Korean intelligence. The ties seemingly remained intact despite distancing herself from the agency, influencing her subsequent professional endeavors.

Premium items and financial benefits were allegedly exchanged for Terry's advocacy, masking the true extent of her collaboration with South Korean intelligence during her stint post-CIA. Her articles in The Washington Post and Foreign Affairs, some of which reportedly pushed agendas directed by South Korean officials, have now been flagged with editor's notes post-indictment.

The legal representative for Terry disputed the charges, staunchly defending her integrity and previous professional roles. "These allegations are unfounded and distort the work of a scholar and news analyst known for her independence and years of service to the United States," said Terry's lawyer.

Media Outlets Respond to Indictment

Following the dissemination of the indictment details, The Washington Post and Foreign Affairs, where Terry contributed various pieces, have each taken steps to address readers' concerns about the content's authenticity and impartiality.

Foreign Affairs issued a statement emphasizing the importance of authorial transparency. "Foreign Affairs requires all contributors to disclose any affiliation or activity that could present a genuine or perceived conflict of interest or question the integrity of their work. We take these allegations very seriously," the journal commented.

A Washington Post spokesperson conveyed the organization's stance to Fox My News Digital, underlining their commitment to independent journalism and their ongoing review of the disclosed indictment.

Terry and Her Articles Under Scrutiny

The revelation came to light after a detailed examination of Terry’s activities dating back to 2013 was made public on July 16, 2024. This examination connects her to a series of exchanges and benefits ranging from luxurious gifts to financial backing for her public policy initiatives.

The editor's note in The Washington Post concisely stated the core of the indictment: "On July 16, a federal indictment was made public alleging that Sue Mi Terry had acted as an unregistered agent of the South Korean government beginning in 2013."

Conclusion

Sue Mi Terry, a former CIA analyst, has been charged with serious allegations related to her undisclosed ties to South Korean intelligence. The charges, revealed by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, accuse Terry of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act by secretly aiding South Korean operatives while working as a journalist. Media outlets such as The Washington Post and Foreign Affairs have since added editor's notes to her opinion pieces, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and independent journalism.
