VP Kamala Harris Chooses Gov. Tim Walz as 2024 Running Mate

 August 6, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris has nominated Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her Vice Presidential partner for the upcoming election cycle.

Gov. Walz, a strong proponent of immigrants' rights, brings a history of progressive policies on immigration to the national stage, New York Post reported.

Minnesota's governor has been a vocal advocate for turning his state into a sanctuary for undocumented migrants, often at odds with federal policies under former administrations. He has implemented significant measures offering state-funded health care, driver’s licenses, and free college tuition to undocumented migrants, asserting that these policies contribute to the overall safety and well-being of all residents.

Walz's stance on immigration extends beyond social amenities; he is a firm believer in the federal government’s responsibility for immigration enforcement. He has consistently maintained that local law enforcement should not bear the burden of federal immigration laws.

Walz argues that ensuring all drivers are properly licensed and insured is essential for public safety.

"As a longtime supporter of this bill, I am proud to finally sign it into law, making our roads safer and moving us toward our goal of making Minnesota the best state to raise a family for everyone," stated Governor Tim Walz on the passage of legislative measures benefiting undocumented migrants.

Walz's military background and his extensive experience in politics, having served in the Army National Guard for 24 years before his time in the House of Representatives, add a layer of depth to his profile.

Policies and Reactions Define Walz’s Tenure

During his time as governor, Walz also took decisive actions that underscored his criticisms of federal immigration policies. He withdrew state troops from the southern border, a protest against the migrant family separations that occurred under President Donald Trump’s administration.

He has been particularly critical of President Trump's border wall initiative, often using wit to highlight its ineffectiveness. "If it’s 25 feet, then I’ll invest in a 30-foot-ladder factory. That’s not how you stop this," he famously remarked.

Governor Tim Walz expressed, "My position on Minnesota becoming a sanctuary state boils down to who has the responsibility for enforcing immigration laws. Here’s what I believe: Congress has given federal agencies the authority to enforce immigration laws in Minnesota, and I support their doing so. Congress has not given local law enforcement that same authority. The role of law enforcement is to enforce state and local laws, not federal immigration laws, and I strongly believe that they should not do so."

Anticipation Grows for Formal Announcement

The forthcoming formal announcement in Philadelphia will mark a pivotal moment in Vice President Harris' campaign, aligning her with a running mate who embodies progressive leadership and a commitment to inclusive governance. This strategic move aims to energize a base that values comprehensive immigration reform and social equity.

The VP selection marks a notable point in political strategy by aligning Harris with a notable advocate for both grassroots and systemic change, which could prove essential in the forthcoming electoral bout.

In conclusion, Governor Walz's advocacy for immigrant rights, combined with his entrenched values on federal versus state responsibilities in law enforcement, paints the portrait of a running mate poised to influence the national dialogue on immigration and law enforcement policy. The formal introduction of this political duo will be an event to watch closely as they campaign towards the November election.
