Virginia Leaders Denounce Racist Attack on Gubernatorial Hopeful Winsome Earle-Sears

 August 24, 2025, NEWS

A vile sign targeting Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican candidate for governor, has ignited a firestorm of condemnation from across the political spectrum.

According to Breitbart, during a protest outside an Arlington School Board meeting, a racist message directed at Earle-Sears criticized her stance against transgender bathroom and locker room policies, comparing her position to segregation-era bigotry, and lawmakers from both parties have swiftly rebuked the hateful rhetoric.

The controversy erupted when protesters rallied outside the Arlington School Board meeting, where Earle-Sears spoke out against a policy allowing students to use facilities based on their chosen gender identity.

Lawmakers Unite Against Hateful Sign

Demonstrators supporting the school district’s transgender policy held signs, one of which took a vicious turn by attacking Earle-Sears personally with racially charged language.

One side of the sign taunted, “Hey Winsome, you have a gender neutral bathroom in your house,” while the other side viciously declared a comparison to the Jim Crow-era segregation with a line about water fountains.

Let’s be clear: using the pain of historical racism as a cheap shot in a policy debate isn’t clever—it’s a desperate low blow that diminishes real suffering.

Earle-Sears Stands Firm Amid Criticism

Earle-Sears herself didn’t mince words, posting on X that she’s “disgusted, but not surprised” by the hatred flung her way.

She added, “I’m the sitting Lieutenant Governor, second in command in the former Capitol of the Confederate States,” reminding everyone of her historic role and humanity in the face of such vitriol.

This isn’t just an attack on a politician; it’s a shameful attempt to weaponize history against a woman who’s broken barriers, and it’s telling that she remains unshaken by the noise.

Bipartisan Condemnation of Racist Rhetoric

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin called out the “hypocrisy of the liberal left,” stating, “Winsome is so much bigger than this idiocy,” and he’s right—resorting to racial smears over a policy disagreement is the epitome of intellectual bankruptcy.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp echoed the sentiment with a blunt, “This kind of garbage has no place in America,” cutting through any pretense that this sign was anything but trash.

Even Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina weighed in, noting his family “lived and survived Jim Crow” and slamming the left for “cosplaying” that painful era in a debate about school policies.

Democrats Join in Denouncing Sign

Across the aisle, Earle-Sears’s Democratic opponent, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, didn’t hesitate to label the sign “racist and abhorrent,” pointing out that invoking segregated water fountains and Jim Crow history against a Black woman is “unacceptable. Full stop.”

Virginia state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, also condemned the message, saying it “calls up the pain of racism” and urging a rejection of “all forms of bigotry.”

While it’s heartening to see bipartisan disgust at this stunt, one can’t help but wonder if the same energy would be applied to scrutinizing the progressive agenda on school policies that sparked this clash in the first place.

Policy Debate Overshadowed by Hate

At the heart of this mess is Arlington Public Schools’ rule, reported by ABC7 News, which permits students to access bathrooms and locker rooms aligned with their gender identity, a policy Earle-Sears fiercely opposes.

She told the board, “Here’s the truth: there are two sexes: boys and girls,” arguing that the current approach is “dangerous” and “insane,” a stance that clearly ruffled feathers among activists outside.

Rep. Burgess Owens of Utah, who grew up in the segregated South, nailed the absurdity by saying the left is “so desperate to force boys into girls’ bathrooms” that they’ll exploit racism’s evils, while Sen. Lindsey Graham challenged leading Democrats to clarify if they agree with Earle-Sears or not, pointedly asking them not to “hide.”

A Call for Civility in Debate

This incident is a glaring reminder that policy disagreements, no matter how heated, must never descend into personal attacks or the exploitation of historical wounds.

The Arlington protest could have been a chance to debate the merits of transgender policies in schools, but instead, a single sign turned it into a spectacle of division and ugliness.

Surely, we can argue about protecting students’ safety and privacy without dragging the ghosts of segregation into the fray—let’s hope this serves as a wake-up call to keep discourse grounded in reason, not rancor.
