Virginia Candidate Jay Jones Faces Controversy Over Disturbing Texts

Virginia’s race for attorney general just took a dark turn with candidate Jay Jones at the center of a firestorm over chilling text messages from 2022, as Fox News reports.

In a nutshell, Jones, a Democratic hopeful, is under intense scrutiny for past texts wishing death on a Republican leader’s children and musing about violence against a GOP figure, yet he’s still backed by key party allies while Republicans demand he step aside.

Let’s rewind to 2022, when Jones sent messages to a colleague expressing a shocking hope that the children of former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert would perish.

Shocking Texts Reveal Troubling Sentiments

Not content with that grim wish, Jones doubled down in the same exchange, suggesting such a tragedy could be beneficial if it served his political ambitions.

Adding fuel to the fire, other messages from that year show Jones referencing a violent act against a Republican leader, casually tossing around language about deadly force.

Now, you’d think such rhetoric would be a career-ender, but Jones has since apologized, calling his words “embarrassing and shameful” while claiming he personally reached out to Gilbert and his family for amends.

Democrats Stand Firm Despite Outrage

Here’s where it gets puzzling—despite the uproar, some Democrats are standing by their man, with the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee urging folks to “line up behind” Jones.

Even gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, while condemning the violent tone, stopped short of asking Jones to bow out, saying, “I will always condemn violent language in our politics.”

Spanberger’s mild rebuke feels like a pat on the wrist when the stakes are this high—shouldn’t a line be drawn when death wishes enter the chat?

Republicans Unleash Fury on Jones

On the flip side, Republicans aren’t holding back, with President Donald Trump blasting Jones via Truth Social and demanding he exit the race immediately.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares joined the chorus over the weekend, questioning Jones’ fitness for office and raising alarms over reckless behavior that could endanger lives.

Miyares didn’t mince words, stating, “Jay Jones has shown he’s reckless, biased, and willing to trade away his integrity. This conduct is disqualifying.” Talk about a mic drop—when the current AG says you’re unfit, it’s hard to argue you’re the right pick for law enforcement.

Calls for Accountability Amid Tensions

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears also weighed in, decrying a moral decline in politics and painting Jones as unfit for the role of chief law enforcer with his violent fantasies.

Not to be outdone, Gov. Glenn Youngkin called for Jones to drop out, labeling the rhetoric “disgusting” and beyond unacceptable, especially given the timing with national concerns about political violence on the rise.

In a climate already scarred by threats and acts of aggression in politics, from attempted attacks on leaders to other tragic losses, Jones’ words aren’t just a personal misstep—they’re a dangerous echo of a broader problem. It’s not about left or right; it’s about whether we can trust someone with such judgment to uphold justice. Isn’t that the bare minimum we should expect?
