Vast Majority of New Yorkers Advocate for Mayor Eric Adams’ Resignation Amidst Indictment

 October 6, 2024

New York City's political landscape is shaken by Mayor Eric Adams’ recent indictment on multiple corruption charges.

According to the New York Post, Mayer Eric Adams stands accused of engaging in corruption practices involving bribery and wire fraud, prompting a call for his resignation from a large segment of New Yorkers, as indicated by a new poll.

Mayor Adams, leading the city since his election, faces serious accusations that have significantly impacted his public image and approval ratings. The federal charges against him include conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud. Allegations assert that he accepted substantial benefits, amounting to $123,000 in free or heavily discounted hotels and flights, from Turkish officials and businessmen which supposedly influenced his decision-making in office.

Public Reaction and Polling Insights

A recent Marist poll reflects widespread dismay among the populace regarding Mayor Adams' conduct. About 69% of those surveyed expressed their opinion that he should resign.

This sentiment stretches across party lines with 71% of Democrats and 80% of all polled voters agreeing that Mayor Adams should not pursue another term. The poll, capturing the opinions of 1,073 adult residents of New York City between September 30 and October 1, has a margin of error of ±3.6 percentage points, reinforcing the weight of the gathered opinions.

Moreover, the allegations against Mayor Adams include pressuring city officials to fast-track approvals for the Turkish Consulate in Manhattan and abusing the campaign finance system by fraudulently securing $10 million through straw donors linked to foreign sources. These accusations hint at a deep-seated manipulation of city processes and campaign finance regulations.

A Sharp Drop in Approval Ratings

These charges have led to a plummet in Mayor Adams’ approval ratings, dropping to a low 26% from 37% in November 2023.

Dr. Lee Miringoff, Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, observed a grim outlook for the mayor's stance among the public. He noted significant disapproval among city residents, who not only believed he committed illegal acts but also strongly endorsed his resignation or removal by Governor Kathy Hochul.

Discussing the public's reaction to the allegations, Mayor Eric Adams noted the challenge of changing the tide of public opinion formed on a singular perspective. He stated that it is common for people to lean towards one side of an issue when not all the details are in the open.

Dr. Lee Miringoff said:

"He has fallen significantly out of favor, mired by accusations and a predominantly disbelieving public. This level of mistrust, paired with calls for his resignation, could impede even the basic functions of his duties."

Despite facing overwhelming criticism and calls for resignation, Mayor Eric Adams has not stepped down. Instead, he emphasizes the complexity of the charges and suggests that the complete story has yet to be explored by the public.

The Indictment’s Impact on Political Career

In his defense, Mayor Eric Adams expressed that reactions based on incomplete information are natural. He underscores the complexity of his situation and the one-sidedness of the public's current view. If Mayor Adams chooses to continue in office against the public's wishes, a significant portion of the surveyed populace, 63%, believes Governor Kathy Hochul should intervene and remove him from office.

The unfolding events highlight the challenge Mayor Adams faces, not only in court but also in maintaining the trust and support of New Yorkers. With the majority of city residents believing he has committed serious violations of trust and law, the future of his political career hangs in the balance. The incidents described reveal a potential misuse of power that has significantly tarnished the mayor’s image and effectiveness in leadership.
