The Department of Veterans Affairs is set for a significant downsizing under new plans announced by Secretary Doug Collins.
According to the Hill, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins revealed a strategy to cut about 80,000 jobs from the VA, aiming for a more efficient organization without reducing veteran services.
During an interview on Fox & Friends, Secretary Doug Collins unveiled this ambitious target to streamline the department’s operations. This job cut is part of a wider government efficiency measure mandated by President Donald Trump's recent executive directive.
The job cuts will bring the VA's workforce down to approximately 398,000 employees, returning to its size in 2019. This reduction represents nearly a 15% decrease from the current staffing levels of about 470,000.
The VA expects these workforce reductions to affect all areas, especially hospitals and clinics nationwide.
Seeking to combat inefficiency, Secretary Doug Collins emphasized that the cuts aim to enhance the VA’s overall efficiency. Most importantly, he assured that these reductions will not affect the healthcare or benefits currently provided to veterans and VA beneficiaries.
Secretary Collins stressed that the job cut process would be comprehensive, involving various stakeholders from within the VA. “We’re looking at every angle, from contractual obligations to organizational structure,” he said.
He stated that the review process would include career VA employees, senior executives, and potentially external consultants to ensure efficiency improvements without compromising service quality.
Discussing the implementation of these plans, Doug Collins stated:
It’s going to be a deliberative process that’s going to take some time, that’s going to include career VA employees. It’s going to include senior executives. It’s going to include all across, even bringing people in, if need be, to take a look at: are we being efficient?
In discussing future changes, Collins firmly emphasized the need to maintain quality care for veterans. “We’re going to make sure we’re putting the money and resources toward our veterans getting the help they need,” he assured.
Meanwhile, as part of the restructuring process, officials are coordinating with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to evaluate and improve the department's effectiveness. Additionally, this substantial workforce reduction aligns with broader federal initiatives. The White House and the Office of Personnel Management have consequently launched a government-wide reassessment aimed at reducing staff while increasing efficiency.
However, the VA has not made the decision to cut jobs lightly, as Collins clarified that the 80,000 figure serves as a target rather than a final action. Thus, this strategic move reflects a broader federal directive to optimize resource allocation across government agencies.
