Last weekend, border patrol agents at the Texas-Mexico border encountered unusual contraband that led to multiple arrests.
According to Fox News, two U.S. citizens were apprehended for smuggling a spider monkey, while a separate incident involved a Mexican citizen caught with a substantial quantity of cocaine.
The first case surfaced at the Anzalduas International Bridge when a 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, both American nationals, were flagged for closer inspection.
During the routine vehicle check, officials discovered a spider monkey hidden inside a backpack. Due to protective regulations against the international trade of certain endangered species, the find was particularly alarming.
The monkey was immediately taken to Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, ensuring its safety and care. Simultaneously, another inspection was underway at the Hidalgo International Bridge. There, a 68-year-old Mexican citizen was stopped for secondary scrutiny.
Customs officers found approximately 73 pounds of suspected cocaine hidden within the sections of his Ford Explorer. The street value of the narcotics is estimated at around $980,000. The drugs were confiscated, and the suspect was handed over to Homeland Security for further legal processing. This incident marks a significant narcotics bust at the border. The arrests and confiscations were a result of vigilant efforts by customs officers. Each inspection showcased the meticulous work performed by the agents involved.
Hidalgo Port Director Carlos Rodriguez commended the sharp-eyed customs officers and agriculture specialists for their role in these discoveries.
"Our frontline CBP officers and agriculture specialists continue to remain vigilant as they conduct their inspections; their attention to detail and inspections experience led to an interception of an endangered species and a significant narcotics seizure in two separate enforcement events. We remain committed to preventing the exploitation of protected animals and the spread of animal diseases. Seizures of narcotics also reinforce our continued commitment to our border security mission."

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora sets rules for the trade of species like the spider monkey. Moreover, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, importing monkeys as pets is categorically prohibited.
