University of Kentucky Mourns the Loss of Beloved Dancer

The University of Kentucky community is in mourning following the passing of a cherished young talent.

Kate Kaufling, a 20-year-old University of Kentucky dance team member and nursing major, succumbed to osteosarcoma after a resilient year-long battle with aggressive bone cancer.

Kate Kaufling, a high-spirited sophomore, left an indelible mark on the University of Kentucky Dance Team (UKDT). Breitbart News reported that her osteosarcoma diagnosis in June 2023 revealed her incredible resilience and steadfast commitment to her passions and academic pursuits. Despite undergoing intense cancer treatments, she excelled in her studies, maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

The heartrending news of her death was met with condolences and remembrances from the university’s athletic department and her peers. Dawn Walters, the UKDT head coach, reminisced about Kate’s radiant personality and the positive influence she wielded among her teammates.

“Kate was a joy to coach and to be around. Her smile could light up a room, and she was beloved by all of her UKDT teammates,” reminisced Dawn Walters.

Sandy Bell, the UK executive associate athletics director, highlighted Kate’s exemplary dual pursuit of passion and academia. “In addition to being a talented dancer, Kate was also an amazing student in the College of Nursing who took her academics very seriously,” stated Sandy Bell, appreciating her devotion and the inspiring example she set for her peers.

Survived by her parents, Holly and Steve Kaufling, and her twin sister, Abbey, also a member of the UKDT, Kate Kaufling’s spirit continues to inspire and unite her family, friends, and the university community.
