UN Official Voices Fear Over Potential Trump Presidency Impact

 August 29, 2024

An undercover video has surfaced revealing unease within the United Nations about the implications of a potential second Donald Trump presidency.

Jorge Paoletti, a UN associate legal officer, expressed serious concerns about the organization's future with Trump's policies, New York Post reported.

Jorge Paoletti, who works at the UN’s Office of Legal Affairs in New York, was recorded discussing the potential dangers of Trump's return to the Oval Office. He feared that the former president's "America First" agenda could severely disrupt international cooperation and regulatory efforts led by the UN.

Paoletti outlined that the UN’s objective is to promote a global citizen identity, which could face significant threats under a nationalist policy framework. He mentioned that Trump's approach could challenge the very survival of the United Nations.

Funding and Compliance Concerns Under Trump's Governance

Paoletti also highlighted concerns over financial compliance, noting that the U.S. contributes 22% of the UN's budget. Consequently, a presidency like Trump’s, which has previously criticized major international agreements, could result in decreased funding or compliance with UN regulations. This funding is crucial for the UN's operations and its efforts to maintain global standards, including environmental controls. Therefore, Paoletti fears that potential non-compliance could harm not just the UN, but also international protocols on pollution and climate change.

In discussing hypothetical scenarios, Paoletti speculated on how Trump’s administration might react to directives from new UN environmental agencies. Additionally, his concerns extended to the possible political backlash from Trump's supporters towards global interventions.

"Terrified" UN Officials Worry About Institutional Impact

The leaked footage, aired by a reporter from Steven Crowder’s Mug Club, has sparked discussions about the sentiments among UN officials towards U.S. political figures. Paoletti's words underscored a broader apprehension within the organization about the influence of Trump's policies.

Paoletti stated:

I’m not sure the United Nations is going to survive a second term from Donald Trump. I mean, we are terrified. They’re terrified. Absolutely nobody wants Trump because the purpose of Donald Trump is to end the international institutions that somehow level the playing field. He wants America first.

This fear underscores the perceived clash between Trump's national agenda and the UN's global regulatory and cooperative goals. Moreover, Paoletti elaborated that this conflict could threaten the efforts to establish a global political identity, which he argued is essential for leveling the playing field internationally. Furthermore, Paoletti illuminated the concerns shared by his colleagues, who also fear the reprisals from a nationalistic agenda. In addition, he posed a rhetorical question about the possible reactions from "MAGA" supporters if the UN were to mandate stricter environmental regulations.

UN's Global Citizen Identity at Risk

One of the core objectives of the UN, according to Paoletti, is to forge a sense of global citizenship. However, this aim is directly jeopardized by political movements that prioritize national sovereignty over international collaboration and consensus.

He explained:

One of the objectives of the UN is to create an identity of a global citizen, someone who shares an identity, a political identity, with everybody on this planet. This idea is a threat to the absolute power of the United States because [Americans] don’t want an institution over the US telling the US what to do.

The sensitivity of this subject reflects ongoing debates about globalization versus nationalism, a pivotal issue shaping international relations today.

In summary, the disclosures by Jorge Paoletti have pulled back the curtain on the underlying tensions at the UN regarding U.S. political dynamics. His candid discussion captures the worries about the clash between national interests and global cooperation, particularly at a time when global challenges demand unprecedented collective actions.
