Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged for the first time that his military forces are conducting an offensive in Russia's western Kursk region, marking a significant shift in the war's dynamics.
NBC News reported that the unprecedented assault, which began on Tuesday with up to 1,000 troops entering Kursk, has led to the evacuation of more than 76,000 civilians and prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to call it a "major provocation."
Despite the incursion into Russian territory, Ukraine continues to face challenges on its own soil. On Sunday, a deadly air attack on Kyiv killed a 4-year-old boy and his father, injuring three others. Zelenskyy claimed that Russia had used North Korean missiles in the attack, highlighting the ongoing struggle Ukraine faces in defending its territory against Moscow's 30-month invasion.
In response, more than 76,000 residents were evacuated from the Kursk region as battles raged and Russian forces were compelled to bomb their landscape in an attempt to halt the advancing Ukrainians. The incursion, described by Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a major provocation,” has forced the Kremlin to heighten security across three border regions facing Ukraine.
These precautions include stringent restrictions on movement and enhancements in surveillance operations. Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia, has increased its military presence along the Ukrainian border and reported multiple airspace violations by Ukrainian drones. Meanwhile, on the battlefield, videos have circulated showing Ukrainian soldiers hoisting their national flag on Russian soil, signaling temporary but symbolic victories.

“Ukraine is proving that it is really able to bring justice and guarantees exactly the kind of pressure that is needed — pressure on the aggressor,” echoing a sentiment of defiance and determination.
In his reflection on the ongoing conflict and the justification for Ukraine’s military tactics, Andriy Yermak, the chief of staff for President Zelenskyy, succinctly voiced the rationale behind the significant military measures: “It was necessary to destroy Russia’s military infrastructure because the enemy does not accept other arguments.”
