UCLA Protest Arrests Trigger Congressional Antisemitism Probe

 June 13, 2024

An ongoing unrest that has stirred debates on antisemitism at the institution has prompted a House of Representatives inquiry.

Twenty-seven pro-Palestinian activists were arrested at UCLA during a protest, coinciding with the House of Representatives broadening its investigation into antisemitism at the university.

Breitbart News reported that during the commemoration of Palestinians killed in the recent conflicts with Israel, the group set up encampments at various campus locations.

This led to a larger movement supported by the UC Divest Coalition and Students for Justice in Palestine, urging the university to withdraw its financial investments from entities linked to the Israeli military.

Violence and Harassment Amid Protests Spark Concern

The protest not only resulted in arrests but also saw various acts of violence. The Daily Bruin reported that the arrest of demonstrators occurred after a series of altercations that left both students and law enforcement officers injured.

The Peace demonstrations turned hostile with incidents involving the assault of Rabbi Dovid Gurevich, who was publicly maligned by protesters. Additionally, a security guard and a journalist were attacked, and a university administrator received direct threats about his safety.

The House Committee highlighted these incidents as the backdrop for their inquiry, stating that the atmosphere at UCLA could threaten future federal funding for the institution. Rep. Virginia Foxx expressed deep concern about the negative environment, saying, "[UCLA should] be ashamed of the encampments and the general climate of antisemitism on campus."

Congress and the Department of Education Step In

The scope of the situation extended beyond the university, catching the attention of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. They began an investigation into possible violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, meticulously examining the claims of antisemitic acts and harassment at UCLA.

At a pivotal hearing before the House Committee on May 23, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block provided testimonies. He suggested that certain phrases used during the protests, specifically “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” could be understood as antisemitic, though he refuted the notion that UCLA was nurturing a broader antisemitic sentiment.

During the escalated tensions late Monday, law enforcement, including the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department, arrived in riot gear. By Tuesday just after midnight, officers resorted to firing pepper bullets to disperse the gathering protestors, which was a response to increasing hostility at the site.

According to the Times of Israel:

Video clips from UCLA showed masked anti-Israel protesters accosting Rabbi Dovid Gurevich and calling him a ‘pedophile,’ attacking a security guard, assaulting a journalist, and yelling at a university administrator that he is “not safe.”

Impact on the University Community and Beyond

The response to the protests and the subsequent legal and political actions suggest a rapidly evolving and contentious debate surrounding freedom of speech and the rise of ethnic tensions on college campuses. The UCLA community, particularly its Jewish members, expressed feelings of insecurity, with some faculty allegedly being intimidated to the extent of fearing to walk around the campus.

UCLA has been thrust into the national spotlight, raising profound questions about its responsibility to balance diverse political expressions while safeguarding the rights and security of all its community members. This case continues to unravel, adding complexity to the ongoing discussion about campus climates, freedom of speech, and the thin lines between activism and harassment.
