U.S. Marshals Successfully Locate 200 Missing Children With Nationwide Sting Operation

 July 2, 2024

Over 200 children reported missing were recently found by the U.S. Marshals Service in a nationwide sting operation.

Spanning from May 20 to June 24, "Operation We Will Find You 2" successfully recovered missing children across several U.S. states.

Fox News reported that the initiative was conducted in collaboration with various federal and local agencies, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). This operation, the second of its kind, targeted areas known for a large number of critical missing children cases.

Recovered Children Found in Varied Circumstances

Of the total found, 123 were extracted from dangerous environments, and 77 were discovered unharmed. Most of the rescued children were considered endangered runaways, with only a few linked to abductions.

The operation spanned diverse geographic locations such as Arizona, California, and New York City and involved intense coordination with local authorities to handle complex recovery cases. This included situations of child sex trafficking, exploitation, and other abuses.

Critical Roles of Law Enforcement in Child Recovery

The successful rescue operations were a result of meticulous planning and coordination involving federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Authorities worked tirelessly to track down and recover minors from precarious situations.

The operation saw the rescue of children as young as five months old, demonstrating the wide age range of its coverage. Additionally, over half of these recoveries occurred within a week of the U.S. Marshals taking on the cases.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland expressed his relief and gratitude toward the efforts of those involved in the recovery missions:

There are no words to describe the terror felt by missing children, their families, and their communities. I am grateful to the dedicated professionals of the U.S. Marshals Service and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children who worked to find 200 critically missing children during this six-week operation, and who work every day to keep children safe.

Highlighted Cases of Rescued Children

One of the more disturbing recovery cases involved a 16-year-old girl from Michigan who was believed to be controlled and abused by an adult man. The U.S. Marshals intervened, leading to the arrest of the suspect and the safe recovery of the teenager.

A similar case occurred in Florida, where a 15-year-old girl was found to be a victim of human trafficking. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of USMS and the Miami Police Department, the girl was rescued and received immediate care from the Florida State Attorney’s Office Human Trafficking team.

These operations highlight the ongoing challenge and critical importance of locating missing children. USMS Director Ronald L. Davis emphasized the significance of these missions as a top priority for the agency:

One of the most sacred missions of U.S. Marshals Service is locating and recovering our nation’s critically missing children. This is one of our top priorities as there remain thousands of children still missing and at risk.

The success of "Operation We Will Find You 2" underscores the relentless pursuit and commitment of law enforcement to protect society's most vulnerable members. This operation not only brought children back to safety but also brought hope to families nationwide.

In conclusion, the U.S. Marshals Service's concerted efforts through "Operation We Will Find You 2" have effectively addressed the pressing issue of missing children across the U.S., showcasing the critical importance of inter-agency collaboration in such nationwide operations.
