U.S. Authorizes Long-Range Missile Use by Ukraine Against Russian Targets

 November 17, 2024

In a significant escalation of military aid, U.S. President Joe Biden has sanctioned Ukraine's use of long-range American missiles to target regions within Russia.

President Joe Biden's decision permits the Ukrainian military to attack strategic locations inside Russia, primarily focusing on the Kursk area, Fox News reported.

Details Emerge from Senior U.S. Officials

According to senior officials who spoke to Fox News, this authorization is part of a broader alignment with Western allies, such as Great Britain and France, who have granted similar military support to Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. This information was first disclosed by The New York Times, highlighting a new phase in Western military assistance.

The U.S. has specifically directed the use of long-range missiles in the Kursk region, but it remains unclear whether President Biden will extend this approval to other areas. The deployment of these weapons comes as a direct counter-response to recent Russian aggression.

Before this decision was publicized, Russia escalated its military actions by welcoming 10,000 North Korean soldiers to assist in the conflict in the Kursk region and launching a large-scale missile and drone assault targeting more than 200 locations across Ukraine, aimed particularly at crippling the country's energy infrastructure.

Reactions from Global Leaders on the New Military Aid

The move by the U.S. follows earlier permissions granted by France and Great Britain. In fact, French media outlet Le Figaro reported that these two nations had already authorized Ukraine to launch SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles, signaling an escalation in the involvement of multiple Western countries in the conflict.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has vehemently opposed this development. He warned that the U.S.'s decision to allow Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil could be perceived as an act of war and a direct involvement of NATO in the conflict.

Furthermore, President Putin articulated his concerns regarding the programming and operation of the missile systems. His statement detailed that programming flight assignments for these missiles would require NATO military personnel's involvement, asserting that it would constitute direct NATO engagement in the conflict. As a result, Russian statements have underscored the gravity with which it views this escalation.

Here is the extended quote from President Vladimir Putin:

Flight assignments for these missile systems can, in fact, only be entered by military personnel from NATO countries. Ukrainian servicemen cannot do this. Therefore, it is not a question of allowing the Ukrainian regime to strike Russia with these weapons or not. It is a question of deciding whether NATO countries directly participate in the military conflict or not. If this decision is made, it will mean nothing less than the direct participation of NATO countries, the United States, and European countries, in the war in Ukraine.

Strategic Implications of U.S. Approval

This authorization marks a pivotal shift in the NATO countries' strategy toward the war in Ukraine, raising concerns about the potential for escalation into a broader conflict between NATO and Russia. As the situation develops, global leaders and military strategists will closely monitor the impact of this decision on the ground dynamics in and around Kursk.

This significant move by the U.S. suggests an increasing willingness to support Ukraine more openly in its defense efforts against Russian aggression but also brings with it the risk of pushing the conflict toward a larger international crisis.

Despite the potential consequences, the U.S. and its NATO allies appear committed to reinforcing Ukraine's military capabilities in the face of Russian advances.

As the conflict continues to evolve, the international community remains vigilant about the possible repercussions of these decisions, both for regional stability and for the broader geopolitical situation. The global balance of power and the principles governing international military engagements increasingly intertwine with the strategic dimensions of this conflict.
