Tulsi Gabbard, recently appointed as the U.S. National Intelligence Director, delivered a sharp critique of the CIA.
According to the Daily Caller, U.S. National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard faulted the CIA and the wider intelligence agencies for politicization, specifically under the current administration, pointing out their failure to provide impartial intelligence.
The former Congresswoman expressed her concerns on the "The Ingraham Angle" on Fox News. During this appearance, which occurred last Thursday evening, she was prompted by host Laura Ingraham to assess the extent of politicization in the intelligence community, which Gabbard implied was significant.
In her scathing review, Gabbard said, “I knew it was bad coming in. It’s worse than I thought in a lot of different ways." She demonstrated a strong will to correct these issues, expressing a commitment to cleansing the intelligence community of its politicized elements.
Gabbard pointed to specific failings, including the mishandling of immigration and terrorism threats that have arisen due to these biases.
A notable instance she mentioned included the mismanagement under the Joe Biden administration where Border Patrol agents encountered over 250 individuals on the terrorist watchlist from fiscal years 2021 to 2023, with nearly 99 of them being released back into the U.S. by the Department of Homeland Security.
This misstep, Gabbart argued, showcased a grave dereliction of duty influenced by fears of Islamophobia rather than prioritizing national security. “This example we just talked about, where the Biden administration released these known or suspected terrorists or those with links to ISIS terrorists back into our country, you look at the dereliction of duty of that,” she noted.
One of her focus areas since her confirmation on February 12 has been the purging of certain undesired elements within the CIA. This included dismissing several employees from the Biden era, aligning with President Donald Trump's broader strategy of reducing government expenditure, which also led to the dismissal of some probationary intelligence staff.
Tulsi Gabbard elaborated on the broader implications of politicization which extended beyond the CIA to street-level issues. “But we’ve also seen with the pro-Hamas rallies on streets across the country and the riots," she said.
Such events, according to Gabbard, underlined the necessity to refocus governmental resources on public safety and the appropriate management of internal threats.
