This changed after President-elect Trump personally called both lawmakers, influencing their ultimate decision in favor of Johnson.
Representative Nancy Mace also reached out to Trump amid concerns that Johnson might not gather enough backing. Despite the initial lack of unanimous GOP support, Ralph Norman and Keith Self eventually switched their votes nearly one hour after the first round, ensuring Johnson's success. Self attributed his change in support to receiving fiscal assurances from Johnson consistent with Trump’s vision.
Self explained his position, emphasizing that his priority was furthering the Trump administration's agenda. This conversation with Speaker Johnson led him to believe in the Republican party's strong participation during budgetary negotiations.
