Trump weighs in on potential accountability for Comey and Brennan

President Donald Trump didn’t hold back when asked about the fates of former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan. His sharp words signal a brewing storm over past actions tied to the discredited Steele dossier.

According to Daily Caller, Trump spoke candidly during a multilateral lunch, responding to Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy’s pointed question about whether he wants to see the two former officials “behind bars.” The president called them “dishonest” and “crooked as hell,” hinting they might need to “pay a price” for their alleged misdeeds.

Trump’s comments come amid fresh scrutiny of Comey and Brennan, as the FBI has launched a criminal probe into their roles in the investigation surrounding the Steele dossier—a now-debunked document claiming collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. While Trump admitted he knew little beyond recent reports, his frustration with what he sees as bad actors in high places was palpable.

Declassified Evidence Sparks New Investigations

CIA Director John Ratcliffe has turned over evidence of potential wrongdoing by Brennan to FBI Director Kash Patel, stemming from a declassified “lessons learned” review of the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA). This review uncovered “procedural anomalies” that allegedly allowed officials to sidestep standard protocols.

Brennan, in particular, faces accusations of misleading Congress in 2023 when he claimed he didn’t approve the Steele dossier’s inclusion in the ICA. Declassified information now suggests he actively pushed for its use, casting doubt on his earlier testimony.

This isn’t just a paperwork issue; it’s about trust in our intelligence community. If proven, such actions undermine the very institutions meant to protect us, giving fuel to those skeptical of the deep state’s overreach.

Comey Under Fire for Dossier Missteps

James Comey isn’t escaping the spotlight either, as an investigation probes his handling of the Steele dossier. Back in 2018, he told Congress the FBI hadn’t verified the dossier before using it to secure spy warrants on Carter Page, a Trump campaign adviser at the time.

Later, in 2020, Comey claimed ignorance about issues with Igor Danchenko, the dossier’s primary source, despite the FBI’s apparent knowledge of discrepancies. He also repeatedly misled the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees by suggesting Republicans initially supported the dossier—a claim that doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

These inconsistencies aren’t just sloppy; they point to a troubling pattern of either incompetence or deliberate deception. For an agency that demands public trust, this kind of behavior is a gut punch to accountability.

Trump’s Take: Dishonesty Must Have Consequences

Trump’s blunt assessment—“I think they’re dishonest people, I think they’re crooked as hell”—cuts through the bureaucratic fog. While he stopped short of demanding jail time, his belief that “maybe they have to pay a price” reflects a broader frustration with unaccountable elites.

His words aren’t just red meat for his base; they echo a sentiment many Americans share about fairness in government. If powerful figures can bend rules without consequence, what’s left of our system’s integrity?

Yet, there’s a need for balance—investigations must be thorough, not vindictive. Trump’s restraint in not prejudging the outcome shows a measured approach, even if his rhetoric packs a punch.

Restoring Trust Requires Real Accountability

As these probes unfold, the stakes couldn’t be higher for public confidence in our institutions. If Comey and Brennan are found to have abused their positions, the fallout must serve as a deterrent to future overreach, not just a political score-settling.

From the left, there will likely be cries of a witch hunt, but ignoring credible evidence of misconduct isn’t justice—it’s cowardice. On the right, patience is needed to let facts, not fervor, drive the process, ensuring any consequences are rooted in truth.

This isn’t about revenge; it’s about rebuilding a system where power isn’t a shield for dishonesty. If we can’t hold the highest officials to account, then the progressive agenda of unchecked authority wins, and that’s a loss for every American who values fairness over ideology.
