President Trump declared Wednesday he will soon endorse in the Texas Republican Senate runoff, and expects the other candidate to quit the race immediately.
The announcement landed one day after Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton topped a crowded primary field but neither cleared the 50% threshold needed to avoid a May 26 runoff. Trump's move could reshape the contest overnight and force one of two strong Republicans off the ballot before the real fight begins, against a Democrat.
Trump posted his demand on Truth Social Wednesday:
"I will be making my Endorsement soon, and will be asking the candidate that I don't Endorse to immediately DROP OUT OF THE RACE!"
He left no room for ambiguity about the stakes. In the same post, Trump wrote that the primary fight "cannot, for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer. IT MUST STOP NOW!"
That is the kind of clarity Republican voters deserve. A brutal, expensive intra-party slugfest only helps Democrats.
As Newsmax reported, Senate Republicans including Thune and Sen. John Barrasso urged Trump to weigh in quickly to avoid a costly and divisive runoff. Thune told reporters an early endorsement "saves everybody a lot of money" and frees the party to focus on the general election.
Cornyn wasted no time framing the runoff on his terms. Fox News Digital reported that the senator told reporters Tuesday night:
"Just like the primary, we have a plan to win the runoff, and we are in the process of executing it. Judgment day is coming for Ken Paxton."
Paxton fired back with a populist pitch, highlighting the spending gap and his record fighting the Biden administration:
"While John Cornyn was cutting deals on gun control and amnesty, I was suing corrupt Joe Biden over 107 times."
Paxton added: "John Cornyn spent around $100 million trying to buy this seat. We've spent around $5 million." That spending imbalance is striking, and it clearly didn't deliver a knockout.
Newsmax reported that Paxton said he will remain in the race despite Trump's pressure. Trump responded bluntly. "Well, that's bad for him to say," Trump told Politico. "That is bad for him. So maybe, maybe that leads me to go the other direction."
That exchange tells you everything. Trump wants a unified front, and he is willing to punish defiance.
While Republicans brawl, Democrat James Talarico topped Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a vocal Trump critic, in the Democratic primary. He is trying to become the first Democrat in nearly four decades to win a Texas Senate seat.
Trump made the general-election math plain:
"We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively."
NRSC communications director Joanna Rodriguez echoed that logic, telling Fox News Digital that Cornyn "remains the only candidate who guarantees state Rep. Talarico never becomes a United States senator and ensures the fight for President Trump's Senate majority is waged in true battleground states, not Texas."
The GOP controls the Senate 53-47. Losing Texas, or even bleeding resources defending it, would be a catastrophic, self-inflicted wound.
Prominent Republican donor Dan Eberhart, who supports Paxton, told Fox News Digital that Cornyn's failure to clear 50% despite massive spending exposed weakness. "The runoff voters will be even less friendly territory for Cornyn," Eberhart said. He cast the race starkly: "This race is about MAGA vs. McConnell."
That framing may rally the base, but it ignores the bigger picture. Every dollar spent in a Texas GOP runoff is a dollar not spent flipping a blue seat elsewhere.
Senate Leadership Fund executive director Alex Latcham made clear the top Senate Republican super PAC would keep backing Cornyn. Meanwhile, pro-Paxton super PAC Lone Star Liberty circulated a memo dismissing Cornyn's runoff attack threats as "bluster," claiming his campaign had already "fired every bullet they had."
Veteran Republican strategist Chris LaCivita, who co-managed Trump's 2024 campaign and consulted for a top Cornyn-aligned super PAC, disagreed. He posted on social media Tuesday night with a warning aimed at Paxton's camp: "The second wave is going to be a bitch."
Thune spoke with Cornyn Wednesday morning and told reporters the senator had "a great night." He spent months urging Trump to back Cornyn and made the strategic case plainly:
"The matchup that's good for us is John Cornyn at the top of the ticket."
The Washington Examiner noted that Trump's Truth Social post came minutes after a report that he was expected to endorse Cornyn, a signal that may have been deliberate.
Trump himself kept the door open at a Friday event in Corpus Christi, where both candidates appeared. "They're in a little race together," he told the crowd. "They're both great people, too." But his Wednesday post made clear that the time for pleasantries is over.
The media, of course, will frame any Trump endorsement as heavy-handed. The same outlets that fabricate Trump quotes on air will clutch their pearls over a president rallying his party for a winnable general election. Ignore them.
Republicans have a simple choice: spend ten more weeks and tens of millions of dollars tearing each other apart, or rally behind one candidate and crush a radical-left Democrat in November. Trump understands that. Whether Cornyn or Paxton gets the nod, the loser's job is to salute and fall in line.
Parties that fight themselves lose to parties that fight together. Texas Republicans should know better.
