Trump Shift on Marijuana Could Swing Key States in His Favor

 September 5, 2024

Donald Trump made a statement this week that could swing a significant number of votes his way in blue states.

Trump has had a pivot on marijuana, and it just may be enough to lure in some fence-sitters among moderates and independent voters.

Trump Pivots on Marijuana

Donald Trump made a post on Truth Social this week that is getting a lot of attention in the cannabis world. Marijuana will be on the ballot in Florida, Donald Trump's home state, and Trump signaled that he would be voting in favor of legalizing marijuana as long as it is controlled. This stance is a far cry from the typical stance we see among Republicans these days.

I know a lot of people who rely on gummies, other edibles, and vapes for pain, but these are the same people who have no desire to smell marijuana when they are out on the street. Several of them have been to Democrat cities where marijuana is legal, and they all complain about the stench in cities like Las Vegas and New York. They would love to see these products legal, but controlled and not allowed in public, just as Donald Trump is proposing.

In his post, Trump addressed that legalizing marijuana is going to happen one way or the other, so he would like to see it done right. He stated:

"Whether people like it or not, this will happen through the approval of Voters, so it should be done correctly. We need the State Legislature to responsibly create laws that prohibit the use of it in public spaces, so we do not smell marijuana everywhere we go, like we do in many of the Democrat run Cities.

"At the same time, someone should not be a criminal in Florida, when this is legal in so many other States. We do not need to ruin lives & waste Taxpayer Dollars arresting adults with personal amounts of it on them, and no one should grieve a loved one because they died from fentanyl laced marijuana."

Swinging Blue States Red

I think that Trump's sentiment will hit home with a lot of people, whether they use the products or not. And he's right… regardless of our personal opinions, these products are going to become legalized, especially with the number of people in this country using these products for pain over narcotics. But again, as mentioned above, many of these people simply do not want them used in public or be forced to smell that rotten stench when they are out. To that point, this new stance by Trump could bring the Blue Wall states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin back into his fold.

In the national average, Harris flew up to a 3.4% favorite in Michigan, but that average is now down to only 2% and shrinking more daily. In the latest Trafalgar Group poll, Trump and Harris are now tied. The latest Detroit News survey shows that Trump is back on top by 1%.

Harris shot up to 2.3% in Pennsylvania at one point, but she has been drifting backward in the national average, with her lead now down to a mere 0.8%. The latest Trafalgar Group survey now has Trump ahead by 2%, with the latest CNN and WICK polls having them in a dead heat.

In Wisconsin, Harris' most significant election lead was at 3.8%, but she has slid back to 3.1%, her strongest lead of all the key Blue Wall states. But again, the latest polling is not exactly good for Harris, but polling in this state is all over the place. For instance, in the more recent The Telegraph poll, Harris has a 4% lead, and she is leading by 6% in the most recent CNN poll. However, Trump is leading by 1% in the latest Trafalgar poll and Emerson College poll by 1%. We may need another week or two for this state to settle down before getting a real grip on it.

Analysis

These three states are the key to the election for both parties. I don't see any way that Kamala Harris can win this election without sweeping these states because it is unlikely that she will be able to swing any borderline red states in her favor. And she is behind Trump in Arizona and Florida, tied with Trump in Georgia (and slipping back), and in a virtual tie with Trump in Nevada. Trump also has Ohio and Texas locked up, so Harris has no room for error here. If this stance by Trump has any positive impact for him in those three Blue Wall states, it's game over for Harris in this election.
