Trump Plans Nationwide Immigrant Arrests Targeting Criminals From Day One

 January 18, 2025

The incoming Trump administration has declared a robust initiative aimed at illegal immigrants with criminal records in the US.

According to Fox News, The nationwide operations, spearheaded by incoming border czar Tom Homan, are set to target areas such as Chicago on the very first day.

The Trump administration, under the guidance of Tom Homan, intends to lift several restrictions previously placed on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This will enable a more assertive push towards detaining illegal immigrants, particularly those with criminal backgrounds. The Wall Street Journal has highlighted Chicago as a primary target for these operations, though action will extend nationwide.

Immediate Implementation Across Multiple States

Tom Homan has emphasized the breadth of this campaign, stating that it will encompass ICE's 24 field offices across various states, not just limit itself to Chicago. The key goal is public safety; however, authorities will not limit the scope of arrests strictly to criminals.

ICE currently lists over 7 million people on its non-detained docket, indicating the potential scale of the operations. "Sanctuary" cities, known for their non-cooperative stance toward federal immigration laws, are expected to resist these new measures. Both Chicago and cities in Democratic-led states like Massachusetts and Arizona have already voiced opposition.

Public and Political Opposition Expected

Despite resistance, some officials, like New York City Mayor Eric Adams, have shown a willingness to collaborate on removing violent criminal elements. His dialogue with Homan points to selective cooperation that hinges on the severity of criminal activity involved.

DHS nominee Kristi Noem, aligning with the administration's stance, has expressed her support for increased border security and stringent deportation practices. Noem also plans to end the CBP One app, which aids in processing migrants for parole, marking a significant policy shift aimed at tightening border controls.

Tom Homan elaborated on the upcoming operations:

There’s going to be a big raid across the country. Chicago is just one of many places. We’ve got 24 field offices across the country. On Tuesday, ICE is finally going to go out and do its job. We’re going to take the handcuffs off ICE and let them go arrest criminal aliens, that’s what’s going to happen.

He further added that the focus will be on prioritizing public safety threats but cautioned that being illegally present in the country is still a significant issue.

What we’re telling ICE, is you’re going to enforce the immigration law without apology. You’re going to concentrate on the worst first, public safety threats first, but no one is off the table. If they’re in the country illegally, they have a problem.

Broad Scope and Impact of Immigration Policies

A source closely linked to these plans, however, underscored the administration's intention to commence arrests from day one, hinting that Chicago will be just the beginning of widespread enforcement actions.

This aggressive sweep marks a significant shift in immigration enforcement philosophy under the Trump administration. The planned raids and policy adjustments aim to reinforce the message that authorities will sternly enforce immigration laws. This approach has already stirred controversy and is set to ignite further public and legal challenges.

In closing, the Trump administration's immediate and rigorous actions signify a strong commitment to stricter immigration control, which relevant officials assert will prioritize public safety while leaving room for wide-reaching implications. These efforts not only demonstrate a shift in enforcement dynamics but also set the stage for potential conflicts with jurisdictions opposing federal directives.
