Trump Hesitates Over Burgum's Abortion Stance Amid VP Consideration

 July 12, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has voiced concerns regarding Governor Doug Burgum's severe abortion policies as he evaluates vice presidential candidates.

The Washington Examiner reported that former President Trump while considering his vice-presidential candidates for the upcoming election, expressed concerns about North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum's strict six-week abortion ban.

Governor Burgum signed this legislation into law in September 2023. This law bans abortions after six weeks, with exceptions for rape and incest up to that point, and only permits them afterward in medical emergencies.

Trump hinted that Governor Burgum's abortion stance might be overly strict, saying, “Well, it’s a little bit of an issue. It’s a pretty strong ban.”

In a related shift, the Republican Party has recently moved toward a state-centric approach to abortion legislation. Despite this, the former President indicated some reservations about how extreme state laws should be.

GOP Platform Divides Party Leadership on Abortion Issue

Governor Burgum is not alone among the frontrunners for Trump's prospective vice presidential nod. He competes for the spot with notable figures such as Senators Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance. However, Trump's recent critique of Burgum’s abortion law highlights an intriguing dichotomy within the GOP.

The Republican platform has realigned, promoting state discretion on abortion rather than pursuing a nationwide ban. However, it staunchly opposes late-term abortions, which corresponds with Burgum's almost total ban at the state level.

Former Vice President Mike Pence expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the new GOP stance on abortion, deeming it a letdown for staunch pro-life Republicans.

Pence Disappointed by GOP Abortion Policy

Mike Pence commented on the GOP's abortion policy adjustment, “It was a profound disappointment to the millions of pro-life Republicans that have always looked to the Republican Party to stand to life.”

The controversy has peaked as Trump plans to announce his vice-presidential running mate at the Republican National Convention, which takes place from July 15 to July 18, 2024. This strategic timing may draw added attention and engagement during the event.

Trump reminisced about previous conventions where vice-presidential picks added a layer of intrigue and spectacle, hinting he wishes to return to that tradition. He subtly noted that such decisions traditionally played out during the conventions, making them "practically more interesting."

Conclusion

This GOP debate adds challenges to the upcoming election strategy, with internal disagreements potentially influencing the party's platform and voter turnout. The anticipated vice-presidential announcements amid internal conflicts over issues like abortion will impact Trump's campaign strategy and party unity. The GOP's stance on state versus federal control of abortion laws will test the coherence and appeal of its platform leading into the elections.
