Trump Cabinet Pick Kelly Loeffler Will Give Up SBA Salary for Charity

 January 29, 2025

Former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler prepares to face Senate confirmation hearings as President Trump's nominee for a key cabinet position.

According to Fox News, Loeffler has pledged to donate her entire federal salary of approximately $207,500 to charity if confirmed as the Small Business Administration (SBA) administrator.

The billionaire businesswoman and former Republican senator from Georgia will appear before the Senate's Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee on Wednesday for her confirmation hearing.

This commitment to charitable giving follows her previous practice during her Senate tenure from 2019 to 2021 when she donated her entire congressional salary of $174,000 annually to over 40 Georgia-based organizations.

Business Executive Brings Extensive Private Sector Experience to Role

Loeffler's nomination draws attention to her significant business background and philanthropic endeavors. Coming from a family of small business owners and entrepreneurs, she worked her way up in the private sector for nearly three decades after becoming the first person in her family to graduate from college.

Together with her husband Jeff, Loeffler transformed a financial services and technology company from a modest workforce of 100 employees into a Fortune 500 enterprise employing 15,000 people. She later established another company called Bakkt, serving as its founding CEO and first employee. Her business portfolio also included partial ownership of the WNBA's Atlanta Dream.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Loeffler demonstrated her commitment to public service by donating $1 million to Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany when Southwest Georgia emerged as one of the nation's hardest-hit regions.

Political Journey Marks Transition From Business to Public Service

Loeffler's entry into politics came through her appointment by Republican Governor Brian Kemp to fill the Senate seat vacated by Johnny Isakson, who resigned in late 2019 due to health concerns. Despite her relatively brief tenure in public office, she established herself as a significant supporter of Trump's agenda.

Loeffler spokeswoman Caitlin O'Dea stated:

Like President Trump, Senator Loeffler left behind a successful career in the private sector to advance the America First agenda. Should she be confirmed, she will continue the practice of donating her federal salary to charities and nonprofits across the country – and put her full focus on working to make the Small Business Administration a gateway to the American Dream for entrepreneurs across the country.

Her political career faced a setback when she narrowly lost to Democrat Raphael Warnock in a January 2021 runoff election following a crowded November 2020 Senate race where no candidate secured more than 50% of the votes.

Stakes Rise As Confirmation Process Begins

The former senator's extensive business experience combined with her previous political service positions her uniquely for the SBA role. Through her charitable commitments, she continues to demonstrate dedication to public service despite her considerable personal wealth, estimated at approximately $1 billion.

Loeffler and her husband have maintained strong ties to Republican causes and candidates, including substantial donations to Trump's campaigns. Her role as co-chair of the president-elect's inaugural committee further cements her connection to the administration she hopes to join.

Looking ahead to Wednesday's confirmation hearing, attention will focus on how Loeffler's business acumen and previous Senate experience might influence her potential leadership of the Small Business Administration. Her pledge to donate her federal salary adds another dimension to her commitment to public service as she seeks to transition from the private sector to a key position in Trump's cabinet.
