Trump Blames Biden After Security Lapse at Butler Rally During Assassination Attempt

 August 29, 2024

In a recent interview with Dr. Phil McGraw, former President Donald Trump alleged that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were responsible for the inadequate security at a July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.

According to the New York Post, Trump criticized the current administration's rhetoric and actions, suggesting they contributed to the security shortfall. The incident, which resulted in one death and two injuries, has sparked controversy over the level of protection provided to the former president.

During the hour-long interview on Dr. Phil's Merit Street, Trump expressed his belief that the Biden administration's characterization of him as a "threat to democracy" may have incited potential assassins. The former president also claimed that his team had been fighting for increased security measures, including more Secret Service agents, but their requests were not met with sufficient response.

Secret Service Denials And Resource Constraints

The Secret Service has taken full responsibility for the oversights that led to the shooting incident. However, Trump's campaign had reportedly requested additional security measures in the two years leading up to the event, including more agents, magnetometers for large public events, and snipers for outdoor venues. These requests were denied, with the agency citing a lack of sufficient resources.

Whistleblowers informed the House Judiciary Committee that the limited resources available for the July 13 rally were partly due to the Secret Service's involvement in covering the NATO summit in Washington that same week. This allocation of personnel left Trump's event with reduced protection.

Local law enforcement had offered drone technology to provide additional security for the Pennsylvania rally, but this offer was turned down by the Secret Service, according to a whistleblower who spoke to Senator Josh Hawley.

Allegations Of Reduced Threat Assessment

Further whistleblower testimony presented by Senator Hawley suggested that the Secret Service Counter Surveillance Division (CSD) did not perform its typical evaluation of the Butler site and was not present on the day of the shooting.

The whistleblower claimed that if CSD personnel had been present, the gunman might have been apprehended in the parking lot after being spotted with a rangefinder.

Trump voiced his frustration on social media, stating:

The Biden/Harris Administration did not properly protect me, and I was forced to take a bullet for Democracy. IT WAS MY GREAT HONOR TO DO SO!

This statement came shortly after Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following her testimony to Congress regarding the incident.

Investigations And Political Fallout

The FBI has revealed that the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, had conducted extensive attack planning, making numerous internet queries about both Biden and Trump, as well as major party conventions. However, investigators noted that Crooks became particularly focused on the Trump rally in Butler, viewing it as a target of opportunity.

The public outcry following the near-tragedy prompted the Secret Service to increase Trump's security detail to match that of President Biden. The incident has raised questions about the allocation of protective resources for political figures and the potential consequences of heightened political rhetoric.

In conclusion, the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at the Butler rally has ignited a debate over security protocols for former presidents and political candidates. Trump's allegations against the Biden administration have added a political dimension to the security lapse. The incident has led to changes in Secret Service procedures and sparked investigations into resource allocation and threat assessment practices. As the 2024 election approaches, the security of political figures remains a critical concern.
