In a move that’s sparked both eyebrows and alarm bells, officials named Thomas Fugate—a recent college grad and Trump campaign staffer with zero background in counterterrorism—as special assistant overseeing the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3), just as tensions with Iran boil over and warnings of potential attacks on U.S. soil intensify, Daily Mail reported.
According to his own LinkedIn profile, DHS hired Fugate earlier this year—marking his shift from pruning shears to policy papers.
Before landing this high-stakes gig, Fugate’s resume boasted landscaping and grocery clerking—not exactly the credentials you’d expect for someone steering a major counterterrorism hub.
Yet, here he is, reportedly guiding CP3, a critical arm of DHS tasked with preventing extremist violence, while federal officials sound the alarm about possible retaliation from Iran following U.S. military strikes.
DHS has explicitly cautioned that low-level cyber threats and even “sleeper cell” attacks could target American networks and communities, though officials have not identified any specific, credible threats.
