Trump Alleges Credible Assassination Threats From Iran As Election Nears

 September 26, 2024

As reported by The Daily Mail, former President Donald Trump claims he has received intelligence briefings about "real and specific threats" from Iran to assassinate him.

According to a statement released by Trump's campaign, these alleged threats are part of an effort to "destabilize and sow chaos in the United States" as the 2024 presidential election approaches.

The statement, issued by Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung, asserts that Trump was briefed by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence about the purported threats. Cheung claimed that intelligence officials have identified an increase in "coordinated attacks" over recent months, prompting law enforcement agencies to work on ensuring Trump's protection and safeguarding the integrity of the election process.

Trump Campaign Accuses Iran Of Fearing His Return

According to the Trump campaign, Iran is "terrified" by the prospect of Trump returning to the White House. The statement suggests that the alleged assassination threats are motivated by this fear, contrasting it with what they perceive as weakness in the current administration. Cheung's statement declared:

Make no mistake, the terror regime in Iran loves the weakness of Kamala Harris, and is terrified of the strength and resolve of President Trump. He will let nothing stop him or get in his way to fight for the American people and to Make America Great Again.

The campaign's assertions come at a time when U.S. intelligence agencies have reported on Iranian efforts to influence the upcoming election through cyber activities.

Recent Cyber Attacks Linked To Iranian Actors

Just days before Trump's campaign released its statement, federal agencies disclosed that Iranian "malicious cyber actors" had sent emails containing stolen material from Trump's campaign to associates of President Biden's re-election effort over the summer.

This revelation adds a layer of complexity to the situation, as it suggests ongoing attempts by Iran to interfere in U.S. political processes. The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence jointly stated that these cyber activities are part of Iran's "multi-pronged approach" to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system.

Historical Context Of Iranian Interference

The alleged threats and cyber activities are not without precedent. During the 2020 election cycle, two Iranian individuals were charged with impersonating members of the right-wing Proud Boys group as part of a voter intimidation scheme.

Additionally, Iranian hackers were caught attempting to breach a website used by a U.S. municipal government to publish election results in the same year. While these attempts were thwarted, they demonstrate a pattern of Iranian interest in U.S. electoral processes.

Trump's Recent Security Concerns

The claims of assassination threats come in the wake of two reported attempts on Trump's life in recent months. The most recent incident allegedly occurred at his Florida golf course, while another took place in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.

While no direct connection has been made between these incidents and the alleged Iranian threats, they contribute to an atmosphere of heightened security concerns surrounding the former president.

Iran Denies Involvement In U.S. Affairs

Despite the allegations made by Trump's campaign and the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies, Iran has consistently denied any involvement in meddling with U.S. affairs. The country has not responded directly to the latest claims of assassination threats.

In conclusion, the Trump campaign's claims of assassination threats from Iran have heightened concerns about foreign interference in U.S. elections. These allegations, coupled with recent reports of Iranian cyber activities targeting campaign information, underscore the ongoing challenges in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, the relationship between the U.S. and Iran remains a critical point of focus for national security and political discourse.
