President Donald Trump's administration has initiated a comprehensive plan to revoke Social Security numbers previously issued to undocumented immigrants as part of its enhanced immigration enforcement strategy.
According to Breitbart, the administration has already eliminated over 6,300 Social Security numbers belonging to migrants with criminal records, terrorist connections, or cancelled visas, marking the beginning of a larger campaign to push unauthorized residents out of the country.
The initiative, spearheaded by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem, aims to target approximately 800,000 migrants who have remained in the United States despite deportation orders from federal judges. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is working in unprecedented cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security to transfer these numbers to a "death file" database.
The collaborative effort between SSA and DHS was facilitated by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) group, despite opposition from various government officials, Democrats, tax collectors, and journalists. This marks a significant shift from previous administrations' approach to handling undocumented immigrants' Social Security numbers.
White House spokeswoman Elizabeth Huston emphasized that removing monetary incentives for illegal residents would encourage voluntary departure. The administration believes this strategy will effectively support their broader deportation objectives.
The initiative has faced criticism from agency employees who argue that adding living individuals to the death database is unprecedented and potentially problematic. They warn that this action could lead to immediate termination of benefits and employment difficulties.
Previous investigations have revealed the extent of identity theft affecting American citizens. The Immigration Reform Law Institute found that between 2012 and 2016, up to 39 million cases of identity and Social Security number theft by illegal aliens were reported.
The federal government's previous approach of quietly taxing illegal migrants while overlooking fraudulent SSN use has imposed significant costs on American citizens. These impacts include wage depression, increased housing costs, and widespread identity theft.
Trump's administration argues that the expulsion of illegal migrants will lead to higher wages, reduced housing costs, and motivate companies to develop advanced workplaces competing with China's zero-migration economic advances.
Trump shared his vision for this initiative during a cabinet meeting on April 10, outlining plans to work with migrants who voluntarily return to their countries. The administration intends to establish pathways for legal return, particularly for industries requiring workers.
Secretary Noem reported that thousands have already self-deported, with an estimated 20-21 million people targeted for removal. The department is developing resources to facilitate voluntary departures, including providing plane tickets for those choosing to return home.
