Phoenix's relationship with his mother, Anne Mari Eriksen, was strained by a bitter custody battle that lasted for years. Susan added that Phoenix had not seen his mother or her side of the family in over a decade because of these disputes.
Susan Eriksen reflected on her grandson's transformation from the child she knew: “He was the sweetest kid, smart…” However, her sentiment quickly shifted to despair as she considered the gravity of the situation: "I have no idea what we're going to do now. I have no idea."

Reid Seybold, a former group associate, recalled, "Basically our only rule was no Nazis — colloquially speaking — and he espoused so much white supremacist rhetoric and far-right rhetoric as well."
Chief Lawrence Revell of the Tallahassee Police Department addressed the case directly. "What occurred today was a heinous and despicable act of violence," he stated firmly. He assured the community that his investigators are actively pursuing the case and that his team will bring justice to those affected.

There's a lot of up and down today."
