Trader Joe's brings back apple cider donuts and pumpkin spice cake as fall fever hits early

Trader Joe's has rolled out two of its most popular seasonal bakery items weeks before Labor Day, and the grocery chain's devoted fan base is already calling it the "best day ever."

Apple Cider Donuts and Pumpkin Spice Mini Sheet Cake are back on Trader Joe's shelves, both priced under six dollars, as the chain launches its annual fall product wave well ahead of the calendar. Shoppers have been posting sightings on social media since mid-August, and the enthusiasm from the chain's loyal customers shows no sign of slowing down.

The donuts, a box of six for $4.99, are made by a family-owned bakery in western Massachusetts and use real apple cider in the recipe. Trader Joe's describes the result as a "moist, fluffy texture and slightly tangy flavor." The Pumpkin Spice Mini Sheet Cake, at $5.99, comes in what the chain calls a "smaller format," built on a "spongy crumb, flavored by pumpkin purée and warm spices."

Fans flooded social media before most stores even finished stocking

Shannon Fong, the foodie behind the popular Instagram account @traderjoesobsessed, posted a photo of the returning sheet cake with a caption that captured the mood: "Welcome back yay it's fall at Trader Joe's." The post drew a fast pile of comments from followers eager for pumpkin season. One commenter wrote, "This is the best day ever." Another added, "My favorite time of the year!"

Over on Reddit's r/traderjoes community, shoppers and self-identified employees have been tracking the rollout like a countdown clock. One commenter told the New York Post the timeline in detail:

"Last week of August should have a few items like pumpkin cream cheese, pumpkin butter... Around September 6th it should be most items, then every other week they'll come out with something new until late October/early November when Winter items will take over."

That staggered schedule means the donuts and sheet cake are just the opening act. Trader Joe's reportedly drops new fall products in waves, with the full lineup not expected until early September and fresh additions arriving every couple of weeks through late October.

Under six bucks in an era of grocery sticker shock

Both items landing below the six-dollar mark is worth noting at a time when grocery prices remain a sore spot for American families. A box of six apple cider donuts for $4.99 and a sheet cake for $5.99 represent the kind of small, affordable indulgence that keeps Trader Joe's customers fiercely loyal, and keeps the chain relevant in a grocery market where bigger competitors struggle to inspire the same devotion.

Trader Joe's has never been a political brand, but its business model, limited selection, private-label products, no loyalty apps, no coupons, runs against the grain of the coupon-clipping, algorithm-driven retail world. The chain stocks what it stocks, pulls what doesn't sell, and brings back seasonal hits when the calendar turns. Customers either love it or they don't. Judging by the Instagram and Reddit response, plenty of them love it.

No specific store locations have confirmed which fall items are on shelves yet, and the Reddit timeline remains unverified by any official Trader Joe's announcement. But for the chain's fans, the sightings alone are enough to start planning trips.

In a country where the cost of a grocery run can ruin your afternoon, a six-dollar cake and a five-dollar box of donuts still feel like a win, and Americans will take every small one they can get.
