Rapper Tory Lanez faces a medical emergency during his incarceration at the Tehachapi-based California Correctional Institution.

According to Daily Mail, the 32-year-old artist, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was stabbed by another inmate in the prison yard on Monday morning, sustaining multiple injuries to his face.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed the incident occurred around 7:20 am in a housing unit. Prison staff immediately responded to the situation, activating emergency protocols and providing medical assistance before transporting Peterson to an outside medical facility in Bakersfield for treatment.

Prison authorities launch investigation into violent attack

The Kern County District Attorney's Office and CCI's Investigative Services Unit have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault. The Office of the Inspector General has also been notified of the incident, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Peterson's injuries, while requiring immediate medical attention, are reported to be non-life-threatening. An ambulance transported him to a civilian hospital in Bakersfield, approximately an hour's drive from the correctional facility.

The incident adds another layer of complexity to Peterson's ongoing legal situation, as he currently serves a 10-year prison sentence for shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020.

Legal battle and conviction background

In December 2022, Peterson was found guilty of three felony charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, keeping a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging the firearm with gross negligence. The incident occurred following a party at Kylie Jenner's residence in the Hollywood Hills.

During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion provided compelling testimony about the shooting. She revealed that Peterson had shot at her feet while ordering her to dance as she exited an SUV. The attack required surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet.

Before his sentencing in August 2023, Peterson addressed the court. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford remarked on the disconnect between Peterson's positive character testimonials and his violent actions. The judge stated: "Sometimes good people do bad things. Actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case."

Latest developments in ongoing case

In February, Peterson's legal team filed an appeal citing "erroneous admission of evidence" and "prosecutorial misconduct." His lead attorney, Jose Baez, expressed disappointment with the 10-year sentence, suggesting it was excessive compared to other cases involving death where defendants received lighter sentences.

Peterson's Instagram account has remained active during his incarceration, with recent posts showing him alongside other inmates. The platform served as his primary means of maintaining a public presence while serving his sentence.

The Department of Corrections granted Peterson a 10-month credit for time served, as he had been in custody since his conviction in December.

Violent incident raises questions about prison safety

The stabbing of Tory Lanez at the Tehachapi-based California Correctional Institution has prompted an immediate response from multiple investigative bodies. The rapper, serving time for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion, sustained facial injuries during an attack by another inmate in the prison yard. As authorities work to determine the motivation behind the assault, Peterson receives medical treatment at a civilian hospital while his legal team continues to pursue an appeal of his conviction.
