For weeks, all the Senate has been talking about is this bipartisan border legislation. The only details we were given were leaked, but the text of the legislation has finally been dropped.
As is typical, most of the details we were told were fake news were pretty much on point, which is why GOP Senators are now coming out in droves to distance themselves from the legislation, including one of the favorites to be Trump’s VP, Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.)
Talking Points...
- Border legislation introduced
- Scott says, “Hades no”
- Analysis
This week, we finally got a look at the almost 400-page legislation to address the border that was put together by a bipartisan group of Senators, including Senator Sinema (I-AZ). From what I have seen of the legislation, it will do very little to address the massive surges we have seen at the border.
The bill’s way of addressing the crisis is to shut down border entry points once we have a 7-day rolling average of 5,000 or more migrants per day. But, at 5,000 per day, you are still talking about 1.8 million migrants per year, a level that is simply unacceptable.
Tim Scott has become a favorite to be Trump’s VP and is my pick in this race. I think of all the people that are out there, Scott brings the most to the table to benefit Trump’s campaign. Trump has been against this legislation from the start because of how important immigration is to his campaign.
To that point, it was not surprising to see Scott take the same stance, stating, “It’s a Hades no” when he was asked about the legislation. However, Scott went into far more detail about why he is not willing to accept it, stating:
"I'm thankful that we are finally having a conversation about the border, but it's the wrong one. It should be in a silo. We should be fixing and securing our southern border, and the president of the United States can do that right now.
"He undid what [former President Donald] Trump secures for us. Joe Biden did it by himself. He literally shredded a secure border with his actions as president.”
Scott also explained how he would address the issue moving forward, stating:
"It would actually acknowledge the fact that the vast majority of people coming across our border aren't from Mexico. Literally, Chinese nationals are coming across our southern border at record numbers, we see 150 plus countries represented on our southern border.
“So if we were to do an effective job, we would have these in silo packages so that we could actually confront the problem facing this nation to include what I believe are sleeper cells in our nation, because …the Biden administration, they have not monitored who's coming in our country with an 85% release ratio, with 10 million people coming in by the election."
Scott is a brilliant statesman and he hit the nail on the head here. The man is finally coming out of his shell a little, and the American people are seeing what he is capable of doing when given the keys to the car.
Moving away from Scott, what really baffles me is how we have Republicans in the Senate who are trying to sell this border bill as something that would drastically improve the situation at the border when that is clearly not the case.
This would be handing Joe Biden a huge win and giving him everything he wants while portraying a false sense of security about the border to the American people. Voters need to hold these Senators accountable because they are outright lying to their constituents right now.
