Texas Expands Border Wall With Major Land Acquisition Amid Migrant Increase

 October 28, 2024

Texas has secured a significant tract of land for extending its border wall.

According to Fox News, the state of Texas has acquired a sprawling 1,400-acre ranch in Starr County to bolster the ongoing construction of a border wall.

The Texas General Land Office procured the land within the Rio Grande Sector, a hotspot for migrant crossings. This strategic purchase is part of a state-led initiative, reinvigorating efforts following the halting of the Trump-era wall projects by the current federal administration. Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced funding for these continuing efforts in 2021.

Migrant Traffic and Wall Construction in the Rio Grande Sector

This acquisition allows the state to directly manage over 4,000 acres along the border. Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham emphasized the strategic importance of this new parcel. She cited it as crucial for gaining operational control over border activities.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham conveyed the serious issues current on the newly purchased property:

They said, ‘Look, it's in the main area of where we're seeing the traffic across the border. We have terrible things happening on this piece of property. The current owner is not only blocking the border wall, but she is also blocking law enforcement's access to that property. And to get complete operational control of the border, we need to control this piece of ground.’ So we made her an offer. We found a way to purchase her ranch from her.

Construction has already begun, leveraging bulldozers and other heavy machinery to lay the groundwork for new sections of the border wall. This wall is projected to fortify the area against illegal crossings and reduce unlawful activities such as human trafficking and drug smuggling.

Security Measures and Impact on Illegal Activities

The wider security efforts of Texas have seen a range of measures aimed at stemming the flow of illegal crossings. From the placement of a floating buoy barrier to the assertion of state control over Fronton Island, the state's actions are diverse.

Highlighting the impact of the geographic location, Buckingham reported conditions that underline the necessity of increased border control:

It's at an area of great impact, it's in an area where we see lots of people coming across all the time, not only seeing the people coming across but seeing those women and children who are abused and victimized. We're seeing drugs. We're seeing weapons. We're seeing all kinds of things coming across this particular part of the border. When we were touring it [Thursday], lots of trash everywhere. You can tell there have been a lot of people through there. So we think that this barrier, this wall that the Texas Facilities Commission will build, will help to control that traffic and hopefully shut it down.

The completion of the wall on this vast new parcel aims to contribute significantly to the reduction of these illegal activities. Both the Commissioner and the Governor assert that the barriers implemented thus far have substantially decreased the number of apprehensions along critical sections of the border.

Border Wall Politics in the Presidential Election

The wall and broader border security issues remain pivotal topics in the ongoing presidential election debates. On one hand, the approach of former President Donald Trump, and on the other, that of Vice President Kamala Harris, encapsulate the divisions in strategy and perspective that define current political discourse on this issue.

In conclusion, Texas' proactive land purchase and imminent wall construction signify a doubling down on state-led initiatives to control illegal border crossings and criminal activities. By moving forward with the extension of the border barrier, Texas aims to both physically and symbolically shore up its defenses against a complex spectrum of border-related challenges. This initiative not only reflects the state's commitment to securing its boundaries but also plays into broader national conversations about border security and immigration policy.
