Tampa Officers Rescue Dog Left Tied Up As Hurricane Approaches

 October 9, 2024

A heartwarming act of heroism unfolded on a Florida highway as Hurricane Milton approached the state.

Breitbart News reported that Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers in Tampa rescued a dog that had been tied to a pole off Interstate 75 near Bruce B Downs Boulevard. The rescue occurred as the powerful hurricane was closing in on the state's west coast, prompting widespread evacuation orders.

The FHP shared footage of the rescue on Wednesday, showcasing the officers' compassionate efforts to save the distressed animal. In the video, an officer can be seen cautiously approaching the frightened dog, whose legs were submerged in rising floodwaters.

Governor DeSantis Condemns Animal Mistreatment

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took notice of the incident and issued a stern warning to pet owners who might consider abandoning their animals during the hurricane. The governor praised the FHP officers for their actions and emphasized the state's commitment to protecting animals from mistreatment.

DeSantis stated on social media:

Thank you, @FHPTampa. It is cruel for anyone to leave a dog tied to a post in the middle of an oncoming storm. FL will hold anyone who mistreats pets accountable.

The governor's response underscores the seriousness with which Florida authorities view animal welfare, especially during natural disasters.

Hurricane Milton Prompts Urgent Evacuation Measures

The dog rescue occurred against the backdrop of intensifying evacuation efforts as Hurricane Milton approached. Local officials have closed several major bridges in the Tampa area, including the Skyway Bridge, Howard Frankland Bridge, westbound Gandy Bridge, and westbound Courtney Campbell Causeway, to ensure public safety.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor delivered a sobering message to residents who might be considering ignoring evacuation orders. Castor emphasized that challenging nature is always a losing battle. He explained that if someone is in a single-story house during severe flooding, and the water level rises to 12 feet, it would completely submerge the home. In such a situation, staying inside would be like being trapped in a coffin.

Governor Urges Residents to Seek Shelter

Governor DeSantis reiterated that there was still time for people to evacuate, at least locally. He emphasized the availability of multiple shelters in affected counties, encouraging residents to take advantage of these safe spaces rather than attempting long-distance travel on potentially congested highways.

The governor stated:

All those counties have multiple shelters that are open. There's a lot of space in those shelters right now, and certainly would be safe to do a very short evacuation tens of miles, rather than get on the interstate and go the roads are still open.

National Hurricane Center Issues Urgent Advisory

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) released an update at 11 a.m. Eastern, warning of an "extremely life-threatening situation" for those in storm surge warning areas. The agency stressed that the window for evacuation was rapidly closing, urging residents to follow local officials' instructions.

The dog rescued by FHP officers has since received medical care and is reported to be safe. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of including pets in emergency preparedness plans during natural disasters.

The rescue of an abandoned dog by Florida Highway Patrol officers highlighted the dangers faced by both humans and animals as Hurricane Milton approached. Governor Ron DeSantis condemned the mistreatment of pets during the crisis, while local officials urged residents to evacuate. The incident underscores the critical need for comprehensive emergency planning that includes provisions for pets and other vulnerable members of the community.
