A prestigious handbag theft rattles Washington, D.C., over the holiday.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's Easter meal with her family was disrupted by the theft of her Gucci handbag containing a sizable sum and personal items, Fox News reported.
The stolen purse, owned by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, contained not only $3,000 in cash but also a suite of sensitive items including her driver’s license, passport, a Department of Homeland Security badge, and a Louis Vuitton Clemence wallet. The incident happened at The Capital Burger in Washington, D.C. on Easter Sunday.
The suspect executed the theft by ingeniously hooking the handbag with his foot while Secretary Noem dined. He then discreetly covered the bag with a jacket, creating an opportunity to walk away without attracting attention.
Described as a career criminal, the white male suspect involved was wearing an N95 mask, dark pants, and a baseball cap. His capture was facilitated by the joint efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service.
Further complicating the case, the suspect has been identified as residing in the U.S. unlawfully for numerous years. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is now engaged in the matter, indicating the serious legal and immigration issues at play.
The arrest occurred Saturday following the incident, as the authorities continue their search for a second suspect believed to be connected to the theft. This event coincides with another similar theft at a nearby restaurant just days prior, suggesting a possible pattern.
Despite the swift apprehension of one suspect, the U.S. Secret Service has yet to officially confirm the arrest, citing the ongoing nature of their investigation.
Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ed Martin has emphasized that the theft did not appear to target Noem, given her role at DHS. Nonetheless, the incident has drawn considerable attention due to the high-profile victim and the value of the stolen items.
