Justice Amy Coney Barrett authored the majority opinion, which argued against the sweeping use of universal injunctions by lower courts. This ruling highlights a significant shift towards limiting the judiciary's interference with executive decisions.
Justice Barrett criticized her colleague Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson for what she described as an expansive view of judicial authority. Barrett's opinion suggests that Jackson advocates for an 'imperial Judiciary' at the peril of executive restraint.
In a robust dissent, Justice Jackson warned of the dangers of unchecked executive power, expressing concerns for the future of the U.S. constitutional system. “It is not difficult to predict how this all ends. Eventually, executive power will become completely uncontainable, and our beloved constitutional Republic will be no more,” Justice Jackson stated.
The divergence in views between Justices Barrett and Jackson was notably sharp, with Barrett openly disapproving Jackson's disregard for legal precedence. “We will not dwell on Justice Jackson’s argument, which is at odds with more than two centuries’ worth of precedent, not to mention the Constitution itself,” wrote Barrett.

In response, Justice Jackson dismissed the concerns over universal injunctions as merely technical. Instead, she defended her perspective by outlining the foundational principle that governmental acts should always be subject to legal scrutiny.
