State Department Official Quits After Biden Says US Will Support Israel

 October 19, 2023

Amidst a backdrop of international tensions, a key figure in the Biden administration has stepped down due to disagreements over the U.S.'s support for Israel.

In a recent development, a senior official from the Biden administration has tendered his resignation from the State Department. This decision comes in the wake of President Biden's declaration of material aid to Israel.

The official expressed his inability to serve as the U.S. extends its support to Israel in its conflict against the Hamas terrorist organization.

Josh Paul's Public Resignation

Josh Paul, a dedicated member of the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, took to social media to share his resignation letter. His role involved overseeing the transfer of arms to pivotal American allies. In his letter, he cited the "continued lethal assistance to Israel" as the primary reason for his departure.

"Today I informed my colleagues that I have resigned from the State Department, due to a policy disagreement concerning our continued lethal assistance to Israel," Paul penned on LinkedIn, Fox News reported.

He further elaborated on his stance, stating, "I cannot work in support of a set of major policy decisions, including rushing more arms to one side of the conflict, that I believe to be shortsighted, destructive, unjust, and contradictory to the very values that we publicly espouse."

Paul's Perspective on the Israel-Hamas Conflict

While Paul condemned the brutal attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians, he also expressed his reservations about Israel's approach to neutralize Hamas. He emphasized that the American support for Israel's actions and the ongoing occupation would lead to prolonged suffering for both Israelis and Palestinians.

"Hamas’ attack on Israel was not just a monstrosity; it was a monstrosity of monstrosities," he remarked. However, he firmly believed that the measures taken by Israel, backed by American support, were not in the best interests of the U.S. in the long run.

Paul's decision to resign coincided with Biden's announcement that the U.S. would provide weapons and munitions to Israel, a close ally in the Middle East. This move was in response to Hamas' assault on Oct. 7, which resulted in the tragic loss of over 1,400 Israeli lives.

Paul's Tenure and Moral Dilemmas

Reflecting on his tenure, Paul mentioned the moral complexities and compromises associated with his role. "When I came to the Bureau, the U.S. Government entity most responsible for the transfer and provision of arms to partners and allies, I knew it was not without its moral complexity and moral compromises," he shared.

He continued, "In my 11 years I have made more moral compromises than I can recall, each heavily, but each with my promise to myself in mind, and intact. I am leaving today because I believe that in our current course with regards to the continued — indeed, expanded and expedited — provision of lethal arms to Israel — I have reached the end of that bargain."

Paul concluded his statement by highlighting the contradictions in the U.S.'s stance. He stressed that the nation cannot simultaneously oppose and support occupation or champion freedom while contributing to a world that is deteriorating.

Biden's Position on the Israel-Palestine Issue

President Biden has been vocal about his unwavering support for Israel, especially in light of the recent attacks. He has also emphasized the importance of providing aid to innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Recently, he pledged $100 million in humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, with a caveat that the aid would be halted if it reached Hamas.

Josh Paul's association with the State Department dates back to April 2012. His departure has sparked discussions about the U.S.'s foreign policy and its implications on international relations.

As the world watches closely, the decisions and actions of the Biden administration will undoubtedly shape the future of the Israel-Palestine conflict and the broader geopolitical landscape.
