‘Star Wars' Actor Hospitalized In Mental Health Facility

 March 13, 2024

Once a young star in the vast "Star Wars" universe, Jake Lloyd has faced formidable challenges far from the cameras and the lightsaber duels of his childhood.

In a heartfelt revelation, his mother, Lisa Lloyd, detailed her son's ongoing battle with mental health issues, marking a decade-long struggle that recently led to a 10-month stay in a mental health facility, Page Six reported.

Since his role as Anakin Skywalker in 1999's "Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace," Jake Lloyd has journeyed through life much like the tumultuous path of the character he portrayed. Diagnosed in 2008 with schizophrenia, Lloyd's life took a stark turn, diverging from the promise of early stardom to a series of personal battles.

A Cry for Help Amidst Chaos

One defining moment came in March 2023 when, during a car ride, Lloyd attempted to halt the vehicle amidst traffic, an act that stemmed from his condition.

Lisa Lloyd described the harrowing incident: "He said he wanted to turn the car off. And he turned the car off in the middle of the three lanes, and we were in the middle lane."

The situation escalated into a traffic snarl, filled with "a lot of yelling and screaming," until the arrival of the police, who faced a disoriented Lloyd communicating in what his mother referred to as "all word salad."

Throughout high school and worsening into college, Jake Lloyd faced increasing difficulty. Despite these challenges, he found solace in the world that brought him fame, particularly enjoying the "Star Wars" series "Ahsoka" on Disney+. Despite his tumults, this connection to the franchise remains a bright spot for Lloyd.

Improvements and Hopes for the Future

Lisa Lloyd has observed promising improvements since her son returned to treatment, consistently taking his medication. "He’s doing much better than I expected," she shared, noting Jake's enhanced sociability and his gradual return to his former self.

After a 2015 arrest following a high-speed chase with the police, Lloyd spent 10 months in jail before his recent hospitalization. Throughout these trials, his reluctance to accept his diagnosis heavily influenced his erratic medication adherence, complicating his path to recovery.

Now, with 10 months of treatment behind him and a hopeful road ahead, Jake Lloyd's story might serve as a testament to the challenges of living with mental illness, especially in the glaring eyes of the public.

"Now that Jake is back in treatment and regularly taking his meds, he is starting to act like 'the old Jake' again," his mother proclaimed, highlighting a ray of hope amid years of struggles.

The Continued Battle Against Stigma

Despite the misunderstandings and the stigma often attached to mental illness, Lisa Lloyd's wish for her son is simple and universal. "We all love Jake, and we want to be around him. I just want him to be happy," she said, voicing a sentiment that echoes in the hearts of many who watch loved ones fight similar battles.

Jake Lloyd's journey from a beloved 'Star Wars hero to fighting a much more personal battle reminds us of the often-unseen struggles individuals face beyond their public personas. As Lloyd continues his recovery, his story highlights the critical importance of understanding, compassion, and support in navigating the complexities of mental health.
