A tragic incident has unfolded as Idaho police released footage of an officer-involved shooting.
According to the New York Post, the fatal encounter involved 17-year-old Victor Perez, a non-verbal autistic teenager, who was shot outside his home while holding a knife.
On April 5, Pocatello Police Department officers responded to a distress call about a man, later identified as Victor Perez, chasing individuals with a knife at his residence. When officers arrived, they found Perez lying face down in his front yard, clutching a knife in his left hand.
Despite being on the ground, Perez appeared largely non-responsive to police commands to release the knife. Following further commands, he eventually stood up, still armed, and moved slightly toward an officer positioned across the fence.
Family members were present during the escalation, urging the officers to exercise restraint. Their attempts appeared in vain as the situation escalated quickly.
Within a mere 15 seconds of police arrival, shots were fired. The officers had their guns drawn and directed at Perez, who was significantly distanced from them.
The aftermath of the shooting saw Perez fall into a coma, undergo multiple surgeries, and endure the amputation of his leg. Despite these efforts, Perez succumbed to his injuries and was taken off life support, passing away on April 13. The removal of nine bullets was necessitated during his surgeries.
