An investigation is underway involving a person with ties to the FBI following an attempt to kill former President Donald Trump.
The disclosure regarding the FBI employee came during testimony from agency director Christopher Wray before the House Judiciary Committee, as the Western Journal reports.
During the session, Wray was questioned by Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy on whether any FBI agents had shown displeasure over Trump’s survival post-assassination attempt. Though Wray did not confirm any specific reactions from FBI agents, he addressed a problematic incident that arose within the agency.
The focus of the agency's broader investigation, Thomas Matthew Crooks, utilized a drone to film aerial footage at the rally site where Trump appeared. This premeditated action sparked increased scrutiny concerning his intentions at the venue.
On a critical day, July 6, Crooks conducted a search that seemed to indicate his state of mind. Wray detailed, "On July 6, he did a Google search for, quote, how far away was Oswald from Kennedy."
This online search was said to reflect the shooter’s state of mind regarding his planned actions. Further delving into the shooter’s preparation, Wray revealed during his testimony: "That's a search that’s significant in terms of his state of mind."
Christopher Wray also discussed the internal actions taken against the FBI-affiliated individual involved in the inappropriate behavior connected to the assassination attempt. The person has since been directed to the FBI's internal investigatory arm for disciplinary procedures.
"There have been at least two instances, I think, or one instance of individuals, who posted something that I consider outrageous and inappropriate and unacceptable. And that individual has been referred to our inspection division, which is the arm, our sort of internal affairs investigatory arm that does the disciplinary process," Wray said.
The House Judiciary Committee heard details about how that Crooks actualized his threatening behavior on July 13, when he infiltrated and opened fire at Trump’s rally, causing several casualties. This was precisely one week after the aforementioned provocative search concerning the historic presidential assassination.
Investigations into Crooks’ electronic devices have been extensive but have yet to confirm a clear motive behind his assassination attempt. The probe continues to unravel these critical details as they examine more digital footprints left by Crooks.
The committee was informed that the investigatory team is still piecing together various elements to fully understand the scenario. Wray emphasized the complexity and ongoing nature of the investigation, seeking to transparently communicate the agency's findings as they emerge.
The recent events have led to a significant uproar within the political and law enforcement communities. This case not only highlights potential internal issues within the FBI but also raises questions about the security measures at political rallies.
The investigation into the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump continues to develop, with more updates anticipated as the FBI delves deeper into the incident.
